MARC CHAGALL LITHOGRAPH "DAVID
MARC CHAGALL LITHOGRAPH "DAVID SAVED BY MICHAEL" (1960)...Marc Chagall (Russian/French, 1887-1985). "David Sauve Par Michael" (David Saved by Michael) color lithograph, 1960. Publisher: Verve edition. Marc Chagall's lithograph in colors entitled "David Sauve Par Michael" (David Saved by Michael) from the series "Dessins Pour La Bible" (Drawings for the Bible). Beloved for his dreamlike compositions that bridged various avant-garde movements (Cubism, Fauvism, Symbolism, and Surrealism), Chagall was famous for his signature motifs such as flying figures, bouquets of flowers, animals, as well as references to peasant life and the Jewish tradition. While many of his contemporaries were driven to pursue pure abstraction or non-objectivity, Chagall was faithful to figurative art, albeit with his signature Modernist twist. Size (sight view): 13.5" L x 10" W (34.3 cm x 25.4 cm) Size (frame): 21.125" L x 17.5" W (53.7 cm x 44.4 cm)
The World Wars would certainly interrupted Chagall's career, prompting the artist to move between Russia, France, and the United States; however, Chagall still managed to exhibit throughout Europe and the U.S. Furthermore, Chagall's work was collected by the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition, Chagall created stained-glass windows for Hadassah University Medical Center's Abbell Synagogue in Jerusalem, the Saint-Etienne Cathedral in Metz, the United Nations building in New York City, and the St. Stephen Church in Mainz, Germany.
A note on the verso reads "Original Lithograph Verve Edition" suggesting that this lithograph was published as a plate in Volume X of Verve in 1960. The work contained 24 original lithographs published by: Verve, Revue artistique et litteraire Printed by: Fernand Mourlot, Paris
