Brought up as a Lutheran he made every effort to secure peace between various religious factions including arranging marriages of his children to those of other faiths. Martin Luther (1483-1546) is credited with sparking the Protestant Reformation with the issuing of his 95 Theses on All Hallow's Eve 1517. There had been other Christian reformers and some see Luther's role as building on a foundation that was already in place. Luther would assert among other things that one cannot buy one's way into heaven (through indulgences) but that forgiveness / salvation came from God through faith in Jesus and that the pope did not have the exclusive right to interpret scripture. So he set about making changes that would bring people back into involvement in the church - he translated the New Testament and later the Old Testament into everyday German and wrote hymns that people could sing in services. He increasingly found himself bogged down in the organization of the new church. Many other reformers of the day thought Luther too conservative but he decided to retain a semblance of familiarity in worship. He also wrote catechisms to educate adults as well as children. By 1530 or so the first efforts to collect Luther's writings and sermons into a coherent volume has begun. This volume postdates Luther's death in 1546 but barely by a generation for the first part. It is also an early example of German printing and fancy binding. Condition: Vellum a bit stiff as are leather clasp hinges. Minor toning. Overall complete and stable. A couple margin notes in index section in older (iron gall) ink.
