PERKINS O/C FOLK ART PAINTING, MISS LIBERTYBenjamin Franklin Perkins (Alabama, 1904-1993) oil on canvas outsider art painting depicting Lady Liberty on a starred blue background adorned in a yellow garment with banners reading "Miss Liberty Welcomes Those Persecuted, Sick, Hungry, To The Land of Liberty to Pursue Happiness, Business, Opportunity, Education, Place to Live, Occupation, Vacation, Military Service, This Is America". Signed and dated "6-27-90 B-F-P". Housed and float mounted in a wood frame. Sight: 32 1/2" H x 20 1/2" W. Framed: 35 1/4" H X 23 3/4" W. Note: Reverend Benjamin F. Perkins joined the U.S. Marines at age 17 and was eventually stationed to protect President Coolidge. He later returned to Alabama and became a part time preacher. While taking an art course at a junior college, he discovered an affinity for art. Patriotic motifs and Bible stories were frequent themes in his work.
The personal collection of former Folk/Outsider Art dealer Jamie Teal, Nashville, Tennessee; acquired directly from the artist.
Condition:
Overall very good condition with light grime. Light wear to frame.

Kirkbride's Study (1880)The rare work by this teacher and craftsman who is more known for having instructed painters and craftsmen is signed lower right front and again verso where the artist's address is listed as 1334 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia.As headmaster of the Philadelphia Public School of Industrial Art and founder of the Adirondack Summer Art School near near Saranac Lake, New York, Liberty is more known as an art instructor and curriculum director.The subject of this work is an interior view of noted Philadelphia psychiatrist Thomas K. Kirkbride's library and study. It is being deaccessioned by the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library where records confirm the painting was donated to the collection by the Menninger Foundation Museum and Archives. The Menninger Foundation consists of a clinic, sanatorium, and school of psychiatry founded in Topeka, Kansas in 1919.Canvas measures 17.5 x 25.75 with a framed size of 26.25 x 34.25 inches.Good original condition, noting craquelure and slight cupping in lower right corner, chipping along all edges and corners, previous frame marks, 6-inch scratch lower middle. No serious damage or repair.Provenance: Deaccession from the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery - Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library.

To reinforce this message, a "cap of liberty" also deriving its message from ancient Rome, rests atop a flagpole flying the stars and stripes.
