Limoges Enamel Cane -Ca. 1890 -Milord shaped, gilt metal knob with a longer and tapering body hand chased with vertical sprays and encircling flower arrangements, set at the top with a circular shield with the enameled portrait of a beauty, plain partridge shaft and a metal ferrule. With the increasing trend towards the attempted recovery of historical artifacts, there is a tangible legacy in this cane, which is the product of very long French traditional arts. Intact. -H. 2” x 1 ¼”, O.L. 37 ½” -$800-$1,200 -Enamelwork, one of Limoges’ oldest crafts, enjoyed immense popularity in the 16th century. Though extremely costly to manufacture and expensive to acquire, plaques such as this were highly sought after by the highest social echelons. Not only did these pièces d’émail de Limoges serve as a mark of their personal prestige, but it also confirmed their cultural refinement and modern taste. Though enamels fell out of favor following the Renaissance era, they again achieved considerable popularity at the end of the 19th century, a reputation, which lasted through the Art Deco movement.
