[Political Americana - Lincolniana] Abraham Lincoln Photograph By Hesler Printed by Ayres 7.125'' x 9.125'' with Ayres' signature on verso and blindstamp at lower left of recto. This image of Lincoln was captured by Alexander Hesler in Springfield on June 3 1860 just two weeks after he had accepted the Republican nomination for president and before he started growing his famous beard. Hesler sold his glass plate negatives to George B. Ayres in 1865 who discovered the damaged Lincoln plates and copied them although he wouldn't begin printing and selling them until the 1880s. Hesler's broken original resides in the Smithsonian while Ayres' duplicate is now property of the Chicago Historical Society. The image offered here was printed at Ayres' Philadelphia studio sometime in the 1880s as evidenced by the verso signature. The Ed Steers Lincolniana & Civil War Collection Condition: Light wear at edges and a crease running from Lincoln';s mouth to the right edge. Most of the apparent wear at the edges of the photograph is actually in the negative.
