Martha was the oldest of four born to George Balls a pub owner and his wife Jane. Some color transfer area of allover light stain and a few small enhancements to blue thread.

SAMPLER. American 1811 silk on linen. Ten-year-old Martha Fay worked an inner border of diamonds around sets of alphabets a verse extolling the virtues of education and a pictorial section including a large blue bird and footed floral baskets. Good colors. In bird's-eye frame. 19 1/2''h. 19 1/2''w. Sampler has been cleaned and mounted. Sampler reads ''Wrought by Martha Fay Septem/ ber 21st 1811 in the 10 year of her age'' ''When friends are gone & money spent / then learning is most excellent''. Distinctive ''1''s are formed similar to ''J''s. Possibily New England given the number of girls bearing that name and around 10 years old in 1811 living there. Martha Fays were also found in the British Iles during this time period.
