PORTRAIT OF A GIRL WITH
PORTRAIT OF A GIRL WITH KITTENEnglish School, late 18th to early 19th century, portrait of a little girl with kitten, pastel on paper laid down on canvas. Painting depicts a young girl with almond shaped brown eyes, wearing a pink silk hat with large ribbon and lace bonnet and white gown with pink sash, holding a young grey cat in a basket. The child is seated atop a bench with wainscoting and door frame molding visible in the background. Back of canvas inscribed "Lady Beauc----" (likely Lady Beauchamp). There appears to also have been additional writing below which is now illegible, and illegible writing in ink on side stretcher. Housed in an antique carved ribbon molded frame. Sight - 24 1/4" H x 19 1/4" W. Framed - 30" H x 24 1/2" W. Provenance: Estate of Edward Grosvenor Paine of London, New York, and New Orleans (1911-1994). By oral history, descended in his family; there is a possible connection to Lettice Mary Grosvenor (1876-1936) of England, who became Lady Beauchamp when she married William Lygon, 7th Earl of Beauchamp (of the family that inspired the Evelyn Waugh novel, Brideshead Revisited; the marriage ended in scandal). By descent to current consignors. The collection of J.C. and Anne Wilson, Nashville, Tennessee. Note: also included with this lot is the L'Amiral advertising poster (lithographed paper on cardboard) that was being used as a backing, discovered when the frame was taken off to allow inspection of the back of the portrait. The circa 1900 portrait depicts a Gibson Girl style woman posing with a sideboard laden with various liquors produced by the French company. 18 1/3" H x 23 1/2" W. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
Condition:
Paper has been laid down on canvas. Some tearing/flaking to paper at upper right corner with canvas showing through, 1 1/2" tear to upper center (background), otherwise very good condition. Frame has lost its gilding and has some scattered surface losses and general wear.
