- A RARE WORLD NAVAL ENSIGN AND FLAG CHART
A RARE WORLD NAVAL ENSIGN AND FLAG CHART ON SILK, ENGLI...A RARE WORLD NAVAL ENSIGN AND FLAG CHART ON SILK, ENGLISH, 1839-1845, color ink on silk, verso an old paper label. 31 1/4" x 31 3/4" Note: To help date the present piece, which is updated, a look into the Texas and American flags/ensigns help when dating work. The Texas flag shown in the upper right resembles a mixture of the Burnet Flag, the Second Texas Navy ensign, and the Lone Star flag. The Texas flag presented here, though somewhat incorrect, the mistake likely a result of the changing political landscape of early Texas, nevertheless acknowledges Texas as a naval entity; the inclusion of the Texas naval ensign an important historical detail. In March 1839 the Zavala was the first ship commissioned into the Second Texas Navy. Secondly, the American Commodore's Pennant gives us a clue as to dating the work as the rank was abolished in 1857. Finally the 26 star United States of America ensign was flown July 4, 1837-July 4, 1845. Provenance: The Old Print Shop, Harry Shaw Newman, New York.

Howard;" 15 3/4'' x 25 3/4'', framed 24 1/4'' x 33 3/4''. Note: A native Texan, Pauline Howard was born in San Antonio in 1951. First titled a "Texas Realist" in 1985, her pastel figural work gained traction from the late 1970s until her last documented exhibition in 2002 with the Lone Star Pastel Society at the Panhandle Art Center in Amarillo. A student of the Glassell School of Art in Houston, she graduated with a BFA from the University of Houston in 1977. Her landscapes and architectural works of art recall the oeuvre of Anzalone and Kahn. Pauline Howard's figural works are among her most popular, and are categorically nostalgic, leisure scenes. Though not expressly erotic, suntanned skin and relaxed summer bodies recall hot Texas summers spent on grainy, sweltering Gulf Coast beaches.
