GEVORG YEGHIAZARIAN O/C PAINTING, THE STORY OF THE MERM...Gevorg Yeghiaziarian (Armenia, b. 1963) Surrealist style oil on canvas/collage titled "The Story of the Mermaid's We" depicting a large, pale pink and yellow fish with humanoid face and hands folded at its belly, resting upon a long table with green tablecloth and martini glass. Signed "Gevorg" lower right. Additional pastel nude portrait of a woman with long pale hair, en verso of backing inscribed "To Carmon [or Cazmen]" upper left, and signed and dated "Gevorg 17.10.03" lower right. (2) Melbourne Pottery, Derbyshire The oviform beaded trim teapot and cover with flower finial, slightly curved foliate spout and entwined strap handle, enameled with a Chinese figure holding an umbrella before a long table set with potted plants; the open sugar-bowl with beaded rims and entwined rope- Provenance: With Paul Madden Antiques, Sandwich Village, MA, 21 August, 1987 (the teapot & cover); Estate of Tom and Lee Stanley English Creamware Collection Literature: The style of painting found on the teapot relates to that found on other Cockpit Hill examples and on Derby porcelain. See Donald Towner, "Creamware," Faber and Faber: London, 1978, p. 116, no. 55 for a cylindrical teapot with similar decoration. Towner suggests that the type of chinoiserie decoration found on this piece were "almost certainly by the same enameller that painted Cockpit Hill earthenware and Derby porcelain."
