professionally relined, in fine estate condition, ready to hang. Sotheby's noted "The picture and lighter in tone and fresher in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The paint surface is in good overall condition bar some very minor frame abrasion visible at the right hand canvas edge and there are some addtional very minor old retouched flecks of paint loss in the lower left. There is a mottled varnish and surface dirt overall. Under a raking light there is evidence of an old restored vertical tear in the background centre left measuring approx. 4 in. There is also an uneven craquelure. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the varnish and reveals some old minor scattered retouchings in the background including those aforementioned retouchings to the tear. Overall the picture is in good country house condition."

Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (British, 1769-1830)
Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA was an English portrait painter and the fourth president of the Royal Academy. A child prodigy, he began supporting his family with his pastel portraits at the age of ten. By eighteen he had established his reputation as a portrait painter in oils and received his first royal commission, a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1790. Self-taught, he was a brilliant draughtsman and known for his gift of capturing a likeness, as well as his virtuoso handling of paint. He became and associate of the Royal Academy in 1791, a full member in 1794, and president in 1820. At his death, Lawrence was the most fashionable painter in Europe. His reputation waned during Victorian times, but has since been partially restored.
