John Antrobus (British,
John Antrobus (British, 1831-1907; Active New Orleans 1859-1860) "Mystic Louisiana Bayou Scene with White Heron", oil on canvas, 13-3/4" x 22-1/4", faintly signed lower right "J. Antrobus". Presented in a period gilded and silvered wood and plaster frame in the Renaissance taste. Born in England, Antrobus arrived in Philadelphia in 1850, moving from there in 1853 to Savannah. From 1855 to 1856, he was active painting portraits in Montgomery, Alabama, after which he traveled throughout the American West and Mexico. In 1859, Antrobus opened a New Orleans studio and ambitiously planned to paint a series of twelve pictures depicting Southern life. He was only able to complete two paintings and later joined the Confederate Army in 1861. He lived in Chicago and traveled through the North and central states seeking commissions before settling in Detroit in 1875. He subsequently became one of Detroit's leading painters.
