PORTRAIT OF MARTHA READY MORGAN
PORTRAIT OF MARTHA READY MORGAN OF TN, WIFE OF JOHN HUN...Benjamin Franklin Reinhart (American, 1829-1885) large oil on canvas portrait of Martha "Mattie" Ready Morgan of Tennessee, wife of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan. The subject is depicted seated on a red chair with upswept dark hair and attired in a pale grey formal gown with flowers to the bodice and a matching ornate satin robe or coat behind her. She wears a glove on her right hand and holds a white lace fan with her left hand. In the background is a window with red silk drapery. Signed and dated lower right "B. F. Reinhart Pinxit 1868". Housed in a gilt carved pebbled cove style frame with applied foliate ornaments to the corners, egg and dart decoration to the outer edge and bead course decoration to the inner edge. Sight: 49 1/2" H x 39 1/4" W. Framed: 62" H x 50" W. Note: the wedding of Mattie Ready Morgan (1840-1887), daughter of Tennessee Congressman Charles Ready, to then-Captain John Hunt Morgan of Kentucky has been described as the social event of the Confederacy. It took place at her father's stately home in Murfreesboro on Dec. 14, 1862. Their marriage lasted only 630 days (ending when Morgan was captured and killed), but has been romanticized as one of the great love stories of the Civil War. American historical painter and portraitist Benjamin Reinhart spent most of the Civil War in London, but returned to Kentucky in the late 1860s, where this painting is believed to have been created. He also painted portraits of Gen. Robert E. Lee and Gen. P.T. Beauregard. The date on this painting is 4 years after Morgan's death and 5 years before Mattie's second marriage to Judge William Henry Williamson of Lebanon, TN; it may have been intended to depict Mattie Morgan in her wedding attire. Although John Hunt and Mattie Morgan's daughters both died young, leaving no direct descendants, the painting has descended in Mattie Morgan's family on the Bone side, along with a tea set said to have belonged to her (also being sold in this auction). This lot also includes two (2) first edition hardcover books related to Martha Ready Morgan and General John Hunt Morgan, including: Author signed, MORGAN AND HIS RAIDERS: A BIOGRAPHY OF THE CONFEDERATE GENERAL, First Edition, by Cecil Fletcher Holland, published by The Macmillian Company, New York, 1942; and THE BRIDE AND THE BANDIT: THE STORY OF MATTIE READY OF MURFREESBORO, TENNESSEE, WARTIME BRIDE OF GENERAL JOHN HUNT MORGAN, First Edition, printed by Evansville Bindery for private publication, Evansville, 1998. Flyleaf to MORGAN AND HIS RAIDERS with inscription reading "For Mrs. W.P. Bone--in grateful appreciation for her gracious help in the preparation of this book. Cecil F. Holland Nov. 24, 1942" with a later inscription describing the photo of Morgan's mausoleum affixed below Holland's inscription with scotch tape, book also includes fragments of original dust jacket and a newspaper clipping about the book. Books ranging in size from 8 3/4" H x 6" W x 1 1/4" D to 1 3/4" D. Note: a porcelain tea service originally belonging to Martha Ready Morgan is being sold on the second day of this auction, lot 974.

HAROLD COPPING HIAWATHA FRAMED
HAROLD COPPING HIAWATHA FRAMED LITHOGRAPHS 1904Featured in this lot are three (3) Harold Copping Colour Lithographs of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Poem, "Song of Hiawatha" characters, copyright 1902 C. H. Allen, published 1904. In this vibrant and enchanting colour lithograph, artist Harold Copping brings to life the timeless love story of Hiawatha and Minnehaha. Figures are delicately rendered with intricate details that showcase Copping's mastery of his craft. Each brushstroke seems to breathe life into these beloved literary figures. Each colour lithograph is individually framed in heavy cardboard frames, their front face borders illustrated with scenes from the poem. The Song of Hiawatha is an 1855 epic poem in trochaic tetrameter by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow which features Native American characters. The epic relates the fictional adventures of an Ojibwe warrior named Hiawatha and the tragedy of his love for Minnehaha, a Dakota woman. C. H. Allen was the Cedarine Allen Company, makers of piano and furniture polish in the late 19th century. These lithographs were gifted as "advertising novelties". Reverse sides of the larger pieces read, "Presented with compliments of Cedarine Allen Company Manufacturers of CEDARINE The Standard Piano and Furniture Polish. Clinton, N. Y. FRAME PAT'D FEB'Y 23, 04". The frames are shadowbox style with wood inset trim. A series of these were made by G.H. Allen copyrighted under Birch Bark in 1902. The borders are meant to replicate birch bark in appearance. Each piece features a portion of the poem which the respective lithograph portrays. Lithographs are in nice condition, frame fronts exhibit fading that blend into the illustrated scenes, edges are rounded from normal handling. Largest frames measure 9.25"W x 11.25"L, smallest is 5.25"W x 6.75"L

SIGNED RAUSCHENBERG PRINT "WHY
SIGNED RAUSCHENBERG PRINT "WHY YOU CAN TELL II" (1979)Robert Rauschenberg (American, 1925-2008). "Why You Can Tell II" (1979). Screenprint in colors on wove paper. Hand signed, numbered 73/100, and dated in pencil on lower left. Published by Multiples, New York and Printed by Styria Studio, New York. With the blind stamp of the printer at lower left corner. A hand-signed, colorful Robert Rauschenberg screenprint with offset lithograph and collage entitled "Why You Can Tell II" from the suite "Nine Prints" featuring images of collaged photographs that Rauschenberg selected from books and magazines that bring disparate eras, cultures, and meanings together, set in an attractive, custom frame. Size of sheet: 30.4" L x 23" W (77.2 cm x 58.4 cm) Size of frame: 35.75" L x 27.875" W (90.8 cm x 70.8 cm)
Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Robert Rauschenberg studied at Black Mountain College where he was exposed to exciting artists such as Josef Albers and John Cage. Early on in his career, his Black Paintings and White Paintings justifiably earned the attention of the New York art scene. In addition, Rauschenberg met Jasper Johns who would be an important personal and professional influence; their relationship has been described as "one of the greatest love stories in modern art" (Duncan Ballantyne-Way "The Relationship Between Jasper Johns & Robert Rauschenberg" in "fineartmultiple" 2017).
Rauschenberg created memorable artworks for six decades. A master from the Pop Art era, he explored an eclectic array of materials and experimented with various techniques. Perhaps best known for his "Combines" - three dimensional sculptural collages that he created from seemingly ordinary found objects and discarded materials like tires, umbrellas, sheet metal, and newspapers - as well as vibrant silkscreen paintings which he first screen-printed, then painted over, and collaged photographs from books and magazines.
Rauschenberg was the first American to win the Golden Lion award at the Venice Biennale in 1964. From there, he went on to have solo exhibitions at the Guggenheim, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, and Moderna Museet, among other elite institutions. His art may be found in collections throughout the globe and has sold for tens of millions at auction; his high auction record is $88.8 million at Christie's in 2019.
Several important museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York have collected "Why You Can Tell II".

SISTER MARY CORITA KENT

American, 1918-1986
Eternity is in Love with the Productions of Time , 1966
Screenprint, signed in graphite
Textual, pop-art style image of red striping, matted and framed, identified to verso.
Born Frances Kent in 1918 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, she grew up in Los Angeles and joined the Order of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1936, taking the name Sister Mary Corita.
She graduated from Immaculate Heart College in 1941 and then taught grade school in British Columbia. In 1946 she returned to Immaculate Heart College to teach art. In 1951, she received a master's degree in art history from the University of Southern California; it is also the year she exhibited her first silkscreen print. Corita's earliest works were largely iconographic; known as neo-gothic they borrowed phrases and depicted images from the Bible.
By the 1960s, she was using popular culture such as song lyrics and advertising slogans but in 1965 her Peace on Earth Christmas exhibit in IBM's New York show room was seen as too subversive and Corita had to amend it.
The Boston Gas tank on the Southeast Expressway still bears her famous 150-foot "Rainbow Swash", which is a similar to her design for the 1985 Love Stamp.
Sight: 26 x 9 1/4 in. (66 x 23.5 cm.), frame: 30 x 12 1/4 in. (76.2 x 31.1 cm.)
