NANO LOPEZ "LUCY" SCULPTURE &
NANO LOPEZ "LUCY" SCULPTURE & SIGNED STUDYNano Lopez (Colombian, b. 1955). "Lucy" bronze AND hand-signed giclee on canvas study for "Lucy" - edition number AP (artist's proof) 18/28, 2010, bronze signature stamped on the tail and stamped with edition number on buttocks, giclee signed on lower right and edition number on lower left. Nano Lopez' bronze entitled "Lucy" presents an endearing feline sitting on a rug, beside her ball of yarn, waiting patiently for her milk bowl to be filled. Look closely, and you will see the message "Got Milk" written in the empty bowl as well as on Lucy's forehead. Amusingly, "Got Milk" as well as "More Milk" appear in the giclee study of Lucy the cat. Nano Lopez calls his animal sculptures Nanimals and has created narratives for many of his Nanimals. In his words, "Lucy has been waiting now for an eternal three minutes and her butler has yet to refill her milk bowl. But she is very patient and the thought of either a nap or a little yarn kicking has come through her mind." Size of bronze: 8.625" L x 12" W x 10.25" H (21.9 cm x 30.5 cm x 26 cm)
This piece was created via the traditional lost wax process that originated in ancient Greece and Rome. Once the bronze was cast, Lopez added countless details via metal chasing, applied patinas to imbue the work with vibrant colors, and finally applied several coats of UV protective lacquer to both enhance and preserve the patina. In Lopez' own words, "The transformation from clay to bronze has always been magical to me." (artist's website)
"Nanimals evoke the magic of seeing the world again for the first time with the eyes of a child. In his artistic process, Nano integrates organic textures and human made objects into his bronzes to create pieces of art that reflect the same attention to the magic, wonder, and creativity that children find in the world around them. Yet, Nanimals are anything but child's play. They describe, as does a fellow Colombian, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a world beyond the borders of ordinary maps, where nature, an unfettered imagination, science, and folklore, monolithic and modern mechanical society exist seamlessly together."
