M1852 US NAVY OFFICER'S SWORD W/
M1852 US NAVY OFFICER'S SWORD W/ SCABBARD A model of 1852 U.S. Naval Officer's sword, possibly a later production. The sword features a slightly curved 28 1/2" blade with naval engravings. The handle is wood with a fish skin and brass wire wrap and bronze handguard and pommel. The scabbard is leather with bronze fittings. The sword is in overall fine condition with rust present at the base and tip of the blade and a dark patina to the handguard. The bronze fittings to the scabbard are loose and the leather itself is rather dried out and cracking.

Steel scabbard has dents. 38 1/2''l. According to consignor information this sword belonged to Lieutenant Alfred H. Rice of the 72nd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Included with the sword are Civil War era family letters and copies of his pension papers.

(Accession #56.3.5 inked on crossguard) Purchased by Norm Flayderman Wallingford Hall Kennebunk Maine. From the most important American sword collection of Philip Medicus New York New York. Literature: Flayderman Norm AMERICAN SWORDS FROM THE PHILIP MEDICUS COLLECTION. Mowbray Publishers 1998. p.132 pl.62 #62f. Flayderman dated this sword to 1815-20 which might be a bit early. It is generally accepted now that these rather elaborate styles were popular in the 1840s. Hilt with traces of silvering small recent chip to bone grip at pommel on reverse. Blade retains 95% of blue and gilt 1'' x 1'' area of pitting on reverse just below langet. Scabbard retains 85-90% of silvering with two small dents on either side near drag. No rust on bluing. Blade tight to hilt. Scabbard original to sword. U. S. MODEL 1850 SWORD, C. ROBYA 19th century U. S. Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword by Christopher Roby and double ring leather Scabbard. Steel blade with vine engraving, "U. S." at one side, "A" enclosing "E Pluribus Unum" on the other, also a banner engraved "C. Roby Co., W. Chelmsford, Mass.", having a pierced foliate guard and wire wrapped handle, possibly sharkskin. Together with a brown leather scabbard, unmarked. The blade is discolored in several places and shows wear, as does the handle. The leather scabbard is cracked, flaking, and separating from the brass tip. Blade 30" long, 36 3/4" long overall in the scabbard. ESTIMATE $400-600
