1796 MYDDELTON SILVER TOKEN PCGS
1796 MYDDELTON SILVER TOKEN PCGS PR63Philip Parry Price Myddelton (English, 18th century) and Conrad Heinrich Kuchler (German, 1740-1810). One 1796 silver token featuring on the obverse a woman, a figure representing Hope, leading two children towards Lady Liberty surrounded by ""British Settlement Kentucky 1796." The reverse shows a downtrodden Britannia surrounded by "Payable by P.P.P. Myddelton." Graded by PCGS as PR63 indicating an average or slightly weak strike with moderate marks or hairlines.
In the winter of 1795-1796 Myddelton advertised large tracts of land he had bought in Kentucky and convinced over 1,200 farmers, artisans, and laborers to move with him. Together with Matthew Boulton of the Soho Mint and Conrad Kuchler, a German engraver, he designed these tokens for his new settlement. The design has been interpreted as an allusion to Britain's loss of the American colonies and perhaps even more specifically to the defeat at Yorktown. It was soon after the first coins were struck that Myddelton's plans were dashed. His plans for a colony in Kentucky were in breach of a 1783 statute. The audacity of his plan and especially of the design of his coins, featuring a dejected Britannia, earned him three and a half years in London's Newgate prison. Only 53 silver specimens were struck in March of 1796, 49 of which were held by the Soho Mint until they were sold into the private market.

MOCHE FINELINE STIRRUP MUSICIAN
MOCHE FINELINE STIRRUP MUSICIAN HOLDING CONCH SHELL, TL...Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, late Moche to early Wari (Huari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A fascinating pottery stirrup vessel in the form of a musician figure clasping a conch shell trumpet in his hands, staring intensely forward with the characteristic Moche diamond shaped eyes. The umber surface is painted with intricate white patterning - abstract zoomorphs at his shoulders, and a pouch is slung over his back. The conch shell was a significant life-giving force from the ocean that the Moche venerated and plays a role in the mythical adventures of their deity, Ai Apaec. In one tale, Ai Apaec fights a monster in the form of a strombus (conch) shell at the bottom of the ocean. Ai Apaec is triumphant and offers the empty shell to the owl god of night. Conch trumpets were often played during ceremonies to venerate Ai Apaec and other deities. Size: 8" L x 4" W x 7.5" H (20.3 cm x 10.2 cm x 19 cm) For a similar example, please see the Art Institute of Chicago's website, reference number: 1955.2304. This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase. Provenance:private Superior, Colorado, USA collection acquired at Paris art market before 2000 #177801
Condition:
Intact and excellent. Some abrasions and chips to nose and stirrup rim. Chipping and fading to pigments, but overall great remains throughout. TL hole on base and second Tl hole on underside of handle. Great preservation to motifs and pigments.
