Misbach (French School late
Misbach (French School late 18th/early 19th c.) "A Muscular Male Nude Positioned Frontally His Raised Arms Grasping Posing Straps" 1792 black chalk and stumping (a technique of blending chalk lines into tonal gradations) on off-white laid paper with watermark DFG unsigned verso inscribed with effaced words in pencil overwritten with others in brown ink "Nettoyer / figure de[?] Place[?] / ...d'un homme-12 Mars 1792" 23 3/8 in. x 18 1/5 in. with 1 1/2 in. x 1 7/8 in. paper addition for the right hand (2 3/4 in. from left end of top edge) unmounted. Provenance: James R. Lamantia Jr. New Orleans and New York. Note: Shepherd Gallery of New York as the lead entry in their summer catalogue for 1995 published the unmistakable twin to this very powerful drawing a watermarked sheet of nearly identical size (24 x 17 in.) with precisely the same technique stumping abstract horizon line and shading of the same darker diagonal segment behind the right calf. That sheet even has an exactly analogous model in a precisely similar position (though this subject appears slightly more muscular) and he too holds with both raised hands an identical posing strap descending from above. The Shepherd drawing is inscribed with the artist's name of Misbach plus the fact that it was executed in an "École de Modele [under] Prof. ____ [and dated Germinal Floréal or Prairi]al An 7" (which in the brief term of the French Revolutionary calendar coincides with a date between 21 March and 18 June 1799). A number of Misbach's topographical views of Paris are recorded; and he helped to train a son Constant Misbach (1808-1850) who exhibited at the Salon as a history painter between 1831 and 1850 when he died at age 42. Nothing else is known of the senior Misbach; but these two "academy" studies certainly demonstrate his full mastery of anatomy and pose even in his evidently early decade of the 1790s. (His son's birth in 1808 means that the father was probably married c. 1800/05 and thus was born in approximately 1775; he would therefore have been only in his late teens and early twenties when these drawings were made.) The fact that this and the Shepherd sheet both received such circumstantial inscriptions apparently argues for Misbach's contemporary renown a status clearly borne out by this second-and substantially earlier-addition to his oeuvre. KÄTHE KOLLWITZ (german 1867-1945)
KÄTHE KOLLWITZ (german 1867-1945) "SCHLACHTFELD" plate 6 from 'bauernkrieg' 1921. Etching and aquatint with 'A.v.d. BECKE/Kunstverlag/BERLIN-HALENSEE' blindstamp. 15 7/8 x 20 3/8 in. [Klipstein 96]. provenance: Private Collection, Maryland. Framed, matted. Not examined out of frame. There appears to be some toning to the sheet along with evidence of mat burn. Sheet is rippled within mat. There is a tiny thread-like white mark in the black of the sky to the left of the main figure''s head. There are also two areas (to the left of the figure near top edge of image) that may or may not be intended by the artist. One spot is approximately 1/4 in. in diameter and appears to be a darker black circle- this area appears to have some depth to it. The other area is an oblong shape, outlined in a darker black (approximately 1/2 in. long). Possible pooled ink? There are also areas where dirt (?) has collected beneath glass of the frame. The mat also appears to be toned.
