A French Statuary Marble Bust of
A French Statuary Marble Bust of Mme. Récamier 19th c. after Joseph Chinard (French 1756-1813) figure with upswept curls and scantily draped with one breast exposed height 20 in. width 10 in. depth 6 in. Note: One of the most notorious beauties of the Empire Period Juliette Recamier's noted Salon was regularly attended by the most promising talents of the literary and artistic world as well as by the political figures of the day. A woman of strong opinions she was known for her somewhat scandalous - and potentially dangerous - Royalist political beliefs. After her refusal to act as lady-in-waiting to Empress Josephine Napoleon exiled her from Paris; she only returned to her beloved city after the Emperor's political demise. The great Neoclassical sculptor Chinard created his portrait bust of Mme. Recamier in 1805/6 during one of his infrequent but highly productive visits to Paris. Though initially trained in Lyon Chinard spent years in Rome where he studied the ancient statuary and modern Italian sculpture deftly combining elements of both in his work. In his depiction of Recamier the sculptor captures the beauty charm and (as evidenced by the scant draping) daring of this remarkable woman.
