Not examined under UV light. There are a few tiny dots of tan accretion in the center (in and around the plums). There is a scuff measuring approximately å_ inch in the lower right corner (just to the right of the signature). There is light surface dust throughout.

PAUL MAZE WATERCOLOR ON PAPERPAUL MAZE (France, 1887-1979) watercolor on paper, fishing boat at dock and fishing shack. Signed lower right, 21" x 29.75" (image), 30.25" x 38.75" (frame). Maze was an interpreter for the British during WWI but was separated from his unit and taken prisoner by the British, thinking him a spy. Maze was sentenced to death but rescued by on officer who recognized him.

Escher was a printmaker graphic artist and illustrator best known for incorporating impossible puzzles or constructions into his works.? This woodcut features a man contemplating a cuboid also referred to as an impossible cube.? This work was likely a predecessor to the man holding an impossible cube at the base of the towered building in one of Escher's most renowned works the lithograph Belvedere (1958).? In that work the man is viewed from the opposite side but is posed in the same manner wears the same clothes and holds an impossible cube while looking at a drawing of a cube that is placed on the checker-tiled floor at his feet.
