(17) ITALIAN PRESEPIO CRECHE FIGURES. TO INCLUDE:two 14" high angels, a 8" long baby Jesus, three 13" high kings, a 18" high Joseph, six peasant men (approx. 13" high), three peasant women (10" to 13" high), a large female figure, possibly Mary, (18" high). All are 19th c. figures. They all show damage, missing or broken fingers, etc. Some of the clothing is newer. The older clothing shows wear and damage.

(15) ITALIAN NEAPOLITAN PRESEPIO CRECHE FIGURES,important extensive collection, late 18th century. Carved wood and terracotta, with glass eyes, dressed in silk. The Nativity, to include the Holy Family, possibly by Sanmartino. Mary holding the baby Jesus, she is a seated figure, 11" high, original silk clothing is shredding, chip to foot, hands. Joseph is mounted on a wooden stand, 12" high, original silk and cotton clothing shows fading and spots but is otherwise sturdy, small chip in hair and foot. Winged angel, 4 1/2" high, damage to two fingers. Sleeping sheep, 5 1/2" long. Terracotta and lead goat, glass eyes, 5" long, minor chipping paint. Two angel heads with wings, one is 2 1/2" shows repair to wing, and the other is 2". Two baskets of fruit, one is 3" diameter, and the other is narrower but 3" high. Shepherd with vest and bagpipes, 12" high, overall good condition. Standing shepherd, tartan trousers, 10 1/2" high, one missing forefinger. Kneeling shepherd on wooden stand, 10" high with stand, some wear to paint and clothing. Standing shepherd with horn on a wooden stand, 11" high, clothing shows shredding. Comes with a later 19th c. display case, oak and glass, 22 1/2" x 26" x 17". Provenance: Mary, baby Jesus, Joseph, small angel, angel heads, sheep, goat, and baskets formerly Costano Collection. The figures were exhibited in the following: Library of the Boston Athenaeum (1986), Attleboro Art Museum (1987, Attleboro, MA), Alfred J. Walker Fine Art (1990, Boston, MA), New Bedford Art Museum (1997), Mint Museum (1998, Charlotte, NC antiques show), Rotch Jones Duff House and Garden Museum (2001, New Bedford), Mepkin Abbey (2002-2005, Moncks Corner, SC), Natchez Foundation (2007, MS), Iris and B.
