  RARE AND UNUSUAL LOUIS XVI ORMOLU, BLUED METAL AND PATINATED-BRONZE LION-FORM MANTEL CLOCK, DIAL SIGNED AGERON A PARISSigned on the works in script Agéron Paris. The eyes fitted with rubies and the clock drum probably with paste. 12 1/2 x 7 x 3 3/4 in. Note: Similar lion-formed mantle clocks are illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de La Pendule Francaise du Moyen Age au XXe siècle , pg. 278-279, plates C-F. Animal form mantle clocks made during the Louis XVI period are rare and are generally executed with fine precision. Condition In good overall condition with wear to the blued metal surface, scattered areas rubbed through. Minor nicks to the enamel dial around the key holes. The clock is not in current working order, with a winding key and pendulum. Please inquire about the works. Feet probably added later in date. Beautifully made and the ormolu is finely cast. Not withstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.

Clock face with scarce remnants of Roman numerals. 19 3/4" H x 9 1/2" W x 6" D. 19th century. 2nd item: French figural gilt spelter and alabaster clock with male and female peasants standing atop a gilt metal mounted alabaster base. Clock face marked "Paris Giloteau and "?? Le Chateau"" with black Roman numerals. 15 1/2" H x 14" W x 5 1/4" D. Both clocks 19th century. Cheney Wells, Southbridge, Massachusetts, No. 49; height: 85 in., width: 19 in., depth: 10 1/4 in. Provenance: Property from the J. Cheney Wells Clock Collection, Southbridge, Massachusetts. The Estate of a New England Clock Collector. Other Notes: Joel Cheney Wells (1874-1960) worked with his father, George W. Wells and two brothers in the family business, American Optical Corporation in Southbridge, Massachusetts. In the early 1920's Cheney began collecting clocks and over three decades acquired over 100 tall case clocks, shelf clocks, mantle clocks, and banjo clocks. Joel and his younger brother, Albert B. Wells, spearheaded the founding of Old Sturbridge Village Museum in 1936. The J. Cheney Wells Clock Gallery opened at OSV in May of 1982. Condition: Condition: Minor inpainting to dial at posts and just below XII; tight splits to bonnet door arch; right pillar of bonnet loose; bottom right brass quarter column mount off but present; feet and possibly fret restored; tin can weights, pendulum, and key present; small splits to base panel at corners.
