ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT LEAF, 14TH C. French, ink, gouache, and gold leaf on vellum, double-sided page, being a leaf from a liturgical psalter found in Lyon, attributed to the 14th century by La Bibliotheque Sainte Genevieve of Paris, 4.5"h x 4"w (leaf), 9.5"h x 6.75"w (frame)

2 MANUSCRIPT LEAVES, 14TH AND 15TH CENTURYTwo manuscript leaves, including:
1. A parchment leaf containing prayers of mass, illuminated with filigree designs to the margin edges, written and decorated by the Carthusian monks of Spain circa 14th century. The sight measures 11" x 9", and the glazed frame measures 16 3/4" x 13 3/4".
2. A vellum breviary double-leaf, with Lombardic capitals (most notable a large initial "P"), Southern Italy circa 1450. The leaf measures 5 3/4" x 8 1/4", and it is loosely housed in a folder that measures 11 1/2" x 9 1/2".
Condition
Each good condition, noting natural rippling to each, and minor creasing to the bottom right of the Carthusian leaf.

FRAMED ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT LEAF, FRANCE, VICINITY OF LYONS, CIRCA 1470 A single leaf from a Book of Hours, in Latin, on vellum, written in small elegant 'lettre batarde' script, ruled in red ink in a single column of 16 lines. Three-quarter illuminated border of gold leaves on scrolling black ink stems interspersed with colored flowers and foliage. One and two-line decorated initials in burnished gold on red and blue ground with white tracery. Text is a Hymn to the Virgin. In a gold frame, floated within mat, glazed, OS: 15 1/2" x 12 1/2", sheet size: 3 5/8" x 2 5/8". Good condition.

This small illuminated manuscript contains on the first leaf a large initial with a full floral border five other large initials in colors and gold with leaf designs extending into the margins; numerous smaller initials decorated with violet pen work; and a profusion of small capitals in red and blue. Likely extracted from a manuscript Book of Hours the Litany would indicate that this manuscript was written in a confraternity or religious community. Rowland Gilson Hazard copy with his bookplate tipped in front pastedown. Leaf 2 torn; portion of leaf 17 lacking; a number of leaves at the end damaged in the outer margins.
