EUROPEAN SCHOOL O/C PAINTING OF MARITIME BATTLE IN AN O...English or Continental School, 19th century, oil on canvas marine painting depicting a naval battle, with two large ships in the center of the painting, one flying the flag of France, the other with possible British Red Ensign, firing at one another as flames and smoke arise from the ships. Two additional ships are visible in the background, with fragments of ships floating in the foreground, all under a sky thick with gathering clouds. Unsigned. Housed in an oval giltwood frame with lamb's tongue sight edge and a scalloped top edge. Sight: 21 1/4" H x 25 1/2" W. Framed: 30" H x 34" W.
Condition:
The painting has a modern wax lining and has been restretched. Heavy craquelure and slight buckling to canvas. Scattered retouching throughout, visible under UV light inspection. Largest area 7" L to upper edge, also a notable area center sky area (in clouds). 1/4" accretion to lower sail of leftmost ship. Regilding to frame. Painting does not appear to have been cut down.
