Hobson was a Navy Rear Admiral who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his participation in the Spanish American War. He went on to be a Representative for the state of Alabama and became a proponent of Prohibition and women's suffrage. He was friends with Nicola Tesla who acted at his groomsman.
