FINE SOUTH ARABIAN ALABASTER MALE
FINE SOUTH ARABIAN ALABASTER MALE HEADAncient Middle East, South Arabia, modern-day Yemen, Qatabanian culture, ca. 3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE. A hand-carved alabaster head boasting soft honey-yellow and white hues, perhaps once part of a funerary stele meant to honor the dead. The poignant face bears masculine features line a rounded chin, tapered cheeks with protruding cheek bones, a slender nose, and huge eyes with drilled pupils. A pair of semicircular ears flanks the temples and rests below a low forehead and a backswept coiffure with finely incised striations indicative of hair. The stylized expression as well as the elongated face and neck of this ancient work call to mind the modernist faces of Amadeo Modigliani's highly stylized, almost mask-like portraits - making for fascinating parallels between ancient and modern visual culture. Size: 5" W x 7.3" H (12.7 cm x 18.5 cm); 9.4" H (23.9 cm) on included custom stand.
During the first millennium BCE, this part of the world saw several kingdoms - Qataban, Saba (Sheba), and Himyar - emerge that had built their wealth upon desert trade and in particular frankincense and myrrh. The people of these kingdoms created figural representations from alabaster and other stones, including stele with high relief faces honoring the deceased like this one.
