Carved and polychromed tobacconist wall hanging, depicting a black man wearing a straw hat and blue-and-white striped shirt and surrounded by tobacco leaves tied at bottom with yellow ribbon, deeply carved pine, probably Maryland or Virginia, mid to late 19th century, 15-3/4 x 25 in. Probably original paint with scattered wear and losses especially to nose and lower lip, dent at brim of hat, scattered paint retouch to leaves, figure's forehead, cheeks and chin, minor losses at two corners.
