PAIR OF MARLY HORSES 8 ½" thickPAIR OF MARLY HORSES 8 ½" thick x 15 ½" wide x 19" tall Cast bronze copy of the famous marble pair of horses commissioned by Louis XV for his chateau at Marly. Scale models of these horses are popular as the king selected the entries from scale models from various sculptors. Guillaume Coustou was the winner, and models of the horses were made for sale before his first strike of a chisel. They survived the Reign of Terror and the great selloff post revolution. The horses became such a beloved symbol that they were used in parades, until it was recognized that such activities were causing damage to the originals, and copies were commissioned. This pair has developed a wonderful uneven color from dusting over the decades. Appear to be pre-1930 castings.
