8 WARREN MACKENZIE STUDIO POTTERY -
8 WARREN MACKENZIE STUDIO POTTERY - 2 MARKEDWarren MacKenzie (American, 1924-2018). Group of eight studio pottery ceramics including five dishes, one salt shaker, and two cups. Glazed stoneware. Two plates marked along the footrim.
Warren MacKenzie was a renowned Minnesota studio potter. A student of Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, he is credited with bringing the functional Mingei tradition to the United States, and spreading it through his own art and mentorship of students during his long tenure at the University of Minnesota.
Height ranges from 1 1/2 in to 3 1/2 in; diameter ranges from 3 in to 7 1/2 in.
Condition:
All eight pieces in generally good condition; no visible chips, cracks, or restoration. They have some areas of minor firing flaws, most likely to be original to the artistic process. All have wear to their footrim, consistent with their use and age. Six of the pieces have crazing throughout. One of the cups has a network of accretions throughout the interior. The plate with splatter decoration has a 3/4 inches long accretion along the underside near the footrim, only visible through careful scrutiny. Along the upper surface of the salt shaker, there is a distinctive dark spot due to a firing flaw; along with it, there is a 3/4 inches long area of slight discoloration. In addition to it, there is an unevenness to the surface, approximately 1 inch long. Please contact us for a detailed condition report. Please note that the lack of a condition statement does not imply perfect condition. Email condition@revereauctions.com with any condition questions.
