STONEWARE JAR. West Virginia late 19th century. Stenciled cobalt label ''Marmet Mining Co. Raymond City W.VA'' 10''h. Raymond City is in Putnam County at the mouth of the Pocatalico River. The Marmet Mining Company was based in Cincinnati. In 1891 the company enlisted the Ohio National Guard to help protect non-union miners during a United Mine Workers strike. There are 2 in the making imperfections on the rim but no chips cracks or hairlines.

(6) PIECES OF MERRITT ISLAND POTTERY, MID-20THHere are six ceramic pieces from Merritt Island Pottery. The Pottery was founded and named by Mel Casper, a graduate of the Art Institute in Chicago. Mel and his mom escaped from Chicago and settled in Merritt Island in 1937. They built a pottery studio out of boards sawed from local trees.There was no electricity on Merritt Island in 1937 so his early pieces were not glazed. Mel spent some time in WWII but returned to his pottery, and died in his 90s. Included in the lot are several dated ashtrays (Christmas 1966 & 1967), a coffee mug, square bowl, pot, and owl bank.

NC POTTERY, MARK HEWITT, THREE VESSELS Wood-fired salt glazed stoneware, the first piece is a vase drilled to create a table lamp and mounted to a wooden base, the vase is marked on the underside with the signature glyph (height to top of socket 17.5 in.); the second is a low teapot with cover, the glaze enhanced by blue glaze drips, with signature glyph (5.5 x 8 in.); the third is an elixir jug, heavily salt spotted with tooled neck and blue drip from the spout WMH stamp (7.25 in.).

GORDON MARTZ (AMERICAN, MARSHALL STUDIOS 6PC STONEWARE POTTERY: SUGAR & CREAMER WITH FOUR GLAZED CUPS. 2 3/4"H (EACH CUP)Gordon Martz (American, Marshall Studios 6pc stoneware pottery: sugar & creamer with four glazed cups., Gordon Martz and Jane Marshall (1929-2007) met while they were students at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred NY. In 1951, they joined the Marshall Studios in Veedersburg, Indiana, founded by Jane's grandmother Jesse in 1922, and operated by the family including Jane's father Nicholas Marshall and her mother Grace, originally to produce lampshades and woodwork. For the next 38 years, the Martzes at Marshall Studios designed and produced a wide variety of functional ceramic housewares including stoneware lamps, dishes, and tiles. The bodies of their ware were formed by slip-casting, ram pressing, or jiggering, and the pieces were hand decorated. Their work was recognized by a design award from the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, which also has some of their work in its permanent collection. Dimensions: 2 3/4"H (each cup)

Deaccessioned from MESDA and Old Salem to benefit the Acquisition Fund.
