WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE (NY/CA/IN, 1849-1916) Shore Path with Berry Pickers and Walking Figure, Shinnecock Hills, Long Island; oil on mahogany panel, signed lower left, housed in a replica gold Impressionist matched corner frame. Figures possibly are those of Mrs. William M. Chase (Alice Gerson) and their two daughters, OS: 14 3/4" x 18 3/4", SS: 10 1/4" x 14 1/4". Very good condition. Signed in artist's hand and inventory numbered, with size by Vose Gallery verso. Includes the original 1949 receipt from Robert C. Vose of Boston.
Chase was a dedicated plein air painter who combined elements of Impressionism, Tonalism and Realism. Born outside Indianapolis, he trained at the National Academy and traveled in Europe. He was probably the greatest educator of his generation, teaching at the Art Students League. His studio at 51 West 10th Street in New York and summer studio in Shinnecock on Long Island became social centers for younger artists, further spreading his influence.

Note: Texas-born Martha Sawyers was one of the many artists commissioned by the U.S. Office of War Information to create propaganda posters for the war effort. The poster was produced in 1944. In this vivid picture the artillery soldier mans a 50. caliber machine gun. He appears strong and calm as a Mitsubishi Zero fighter plane crashes in the background. Collier's magazine sent the artist to China Burma and India during WWII. Numerous illustrated articles about what she observed were published.
