New Market Virginia sampler, yellow
New Market Virginia sampler, yellow house with fence flanked by two large trees, small outbuilding or gate to left of house, six-line top panel, stitched on bottom line "Virginia Miles Age 12 years New Market March 8th 1844", inner sawtooth border, strawberry vine outer border, silk on linen, 16 x 17 in.; wood frame with gilt cove molding. Fading, browning of linen, some loose threads, stretched over cardboard and glued to the back, some discoloration to glued-down areas. The 1850 U.S. Census lists Virginia Miles as 17 years old and living in Shenandoah, Virginia. Marriage records from Virginia indicate that she married George Bouse, a Methodist minister, in 1851. They lived for a time in Maryland and later in Taylor, Centre County, Pennsylvania.

Kerr"; Rowan County, North Carolina court bond, 1833, involving cash and "4 negroes", crossed out ; last will of Alexander Silliman, Sumter District, South Carolina, "To my brother James…I now give…the service of my negroe George…", separations ; Rowan County 1845 summons regarding guardianship of a mentally handicapped person, Reese Johnston, "…much attached to an old black man formerly the property of the said Reese's father…"; two account statements of Margaret Wilson, one 1829 listing "Negroes - 124.29", one 1842 listing "8 pr. Negro Shoes…1.00…8.00" bought of C. E. Moss & Co. 1784 hand-drawn Virginia map, "Rough Sketch of 32,000 acres of land in Montgomery County in Virginia Surveyed for Mr. Levi Hollingsworth of Philadelphia in the Year 1784", signed by Dorsey Pentecost, showing 32 tracts of land along the Guyandotte River, south of where it meets the Ohio River in modern day West Virginia, additional notes describe the land, navigation routes, types of trees present, and its proximity to the "fertile settlements of Caintucky [sic]", on laid paper with watermarks, 23 x 19 in. Toning, fading, foxing, soiling, stains, creases with separations, tears and losses (affecting text and signature). Property of a Descendant of Anthony Morris of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

STONEWARE JAR. West Virginia late 19th century. Stenciled cobalt label ''Marmet Mining Co. Raymond City W.VA'' 10''h. Raymond City is in Putnam County at the mouth of the Pocatalico River. The Marmet Mining Company was based in Cincinnati. In 1891 the company enlisted the Ohio National Guard to help protect non-union miners during a United Mine Workers strike. There are 2 in the making imperfections on the rim but no chips cracks or hairlines.

2 PCS SW VIRGINIA STONEWARE , E.W. MORTTwo pieces Southwest Virginia Stoneware pottery. 1st item: Virginia stoneware storage jar, 1 gallon capacity mark and "E.W. MORT/ALUM WELLS VA" rectangular stamp mark to the shoulder. 10" H. 2nd item: Virginia stoneware jug, 1 gallon capacity mark and "E.W. MORT/ALUM WELLS VA" rectangular stamp mark to the shoulder. 10 3/4" H. Both items late 19th century. Edward William Mort (1853-1923) was born in Strasburg, VA and possibly trained as a potter in this area. In addition to working with Washington County, Virginia potters, other crocks stamped "E.W. Mort Mohawk" suggest he may have also worked in Greene Co., TN for a period of time. Mort ceased making pottery in 1893 and became a Methodist minister.
