From MartzPots.org: Gordon Martz and Jane Marshall (1929-2007) met while they were students at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred NY. In 1951, they joined the Marshall Studios in Veedersburg, Indiana, founded by Jane's grandmother Jesse in 1922, and operated by the family including Jane's father Nicholas Marshall and her mother Grace, originally to produce lampshades and woodwork. For the next 38 years, the Martzes at Marshall Studios designed and produced a wide variety of functional ceramic housewares including stoneware lamps, dishes, and tiles. The bodies of their ware were formed by slip-casting, ram pressing, or jiggering, and the pieces were hand decorated. Condition:
Very good condition overall with two spots of staining on outer edge of lower left corner of sheet. Matted.The Ismar Littmann Family Collection was originally amassed by famed German patron of the arts and attorney Ismar Littmann and then later by other family members. A friend to many of the artists he collected, Littmann did most of his acquiring of avant-garde art during the 15 years preceding the 1933 installation of the political regime, which forcibly removed and sold a large part of his collection that totaled over 6,000 works. Although Littmann died in 1934, part of the family was able to emigrate to the United States and Israel with a portion of the collection and a continued interest in European art of the early 20th century.
