Advertising a performance of the popular play Our American Cousin the same play at which President Lincoln was assassinated on April 14th the same day he was shot but at Harvard's Howard Athenaeum two in 1863 two years prior to the assassination. This performance starred Mr. John E. Owens and the broadside notes that colored people will be admitted but to the gallery only. (sight) framed and glazed 14.5 x 18.75 in. Although the portrait is a somewhat inaccurate rendering of Lincoln it is probably based on a photograph taken by Anthony Berger taken at Mathew Brady's gallery in Washington D.C. on February 9 1864. Condition: Not examined outside of frame; some small tears along edges of broadside; some loss to broadside along lower left edge; small hole in upper left corner of black border.

This envelope was removed from a scrapbook assembled by Green Adams. Born in Barbourville, Kentucky, Adams served as a Federal judge & U.S. Congressman before The Civil War. During The Civil War, Adams supported the Union cause & corresponded with President Lincoln. Three letters from Lincoln to Adams are housed in The Civil War Museum & Library in Philadelphia. A letter outlining this history & provenance is available from Adams's great, great-granddaughter.
