A MEISSEN PORCELAIN CIRCULAR SNUFF BOX AND COVER WITH G...A MEISSEN PORCELAIN CIRCULAR SNUFF BOX AND COVER WITH GILT COPPER MOUNTS, CIRCA 1735-1740, of waisted form, the top with "Kauffahrtei" or harbor scene decoration with two robed gentlemen wearing fur turbans in the foreground and a bound blackamoor at their feet, in the mid and background a crenelated tower leads on to a bustling canal and port scene with a swan necked ship and onion domed buildings, the interior of the lid with a scene of a lady at her toilette, attended by two maids doing her hair, while taking a pinch of snuff, the bottom with a continuous band of figures reclining and strolling in a landscape setting interspersed with four large gilt splayed leaves with black outlining, along the waist spays of "Indianische blumen" floral decoration, and on the bottom a fête galante scene in the manner of Watteau, the interior of the bottom with a heavy layer of gilding, the top and bottom (now detached) framed with later gilt copper mounts.NOTE: While only a handful of Meissen circular waisted snuffboxes are known to exist, the overall delicacy of the form had an immediate impact on other contemporary porcelain manufacturers including Chantilly, which by the late 1730's had begun production of a nearly identical version in soft paste porcelain. 5 ANTIQUE SNUFF BOXES1st item: Circular papier mache box with printed top depicting early 19th century U.S. diplomat Jonathan Russell Esq., Minister Plenipotentiary, 3 1/2" diameter. Some wear and scratching to exterior, 1/4" area of loss to edge of lower section. 2nd item: Lacquered snuff box, centered with a watercolor portrait of a veiled woman with Middle Eastern scene in the background, signed illegibly lower left, Friedi--? 2 3/8" diameter. Light fading, 1/2" loss to inner rim, some pieces retained. 3rd item: Gutta percha snuff box with central inset medallion of Francois Ier Empereur D'Autriche (Emperor of Austria, b. 1768-d. 1835), circular with molded spiral edges, 3". Oxidation to medallion, wear to exterior, 1-1/2" area of loss to bottom of lid. 4th item: 8-sided oblong papier mache snuff box with gilt stenciled design to top, 2 7/8" L. Light wear and scratching. 5th item: Ivory snuff box painted with a city scene on one side and lake landscape on the reverse, 3 1/8"L. Probably Italian. 1 1/2" age crack to side with city scene, some glue repairs, wear to paint. All early to mid 19th century. Provenance: Estate of Mrs. Mary Ann Bowers Thomas, Athens, Alabama. A Silver Snuff Box, Dutch, ca. 1860 Rectangular in shape, approx. 1-5/8"W x 1-1/4"D x 1-12"H, with an applied filagree design on the hinged lid and hand chased floral bands around the sides and a shield shape applied to the front. It has a Minerva hallmark on the rim of the lid, a Gothic "a" on the inside rim, and the underside has a maker's mark and a Lion standard mark.

(gilt metal mount and cover are detached from head, shallow old flake to edge of neck); the second in the form of a bearded man with crown (possibly Neptune), attributed to Samson of Paris, with blue crossed swords mark, likely mid-19th century and modeled after an 18th century Meissen example, with engraved gilt metal hinged cover (3 in.) (some wear to painted "hair," some chipping to points of crown, gilt metal mount likely re-attached).
