Note: The son of the menuisier Claude I Sené, J.B.C.Sené was established in the rue du Cléry at the sign of the Gros Chapelet. In 1785, he was appointed fournisseur du Garde-Meuble de la Couronne alongside Jean-Baptiste Boulard, and he gradually supplanted the latter to become amongst the most celebrated menuisiers of the Louis XVI period. Royal patronage dominated the vast majority of his mature career, and he was responsible for supplying seat-furniture to the King and Queen at Saint-Cloud, Versailles, Compiègne, Fontainebleau etc.
Condition
Scattered wear and a few holes to the needlework panels. Minor seam separations, one to the top rail with an old repair. Old repair to the back left legs of both chairs. Minor fading and expected small age splits. Beautifully carved with guilloche borders, large scale. One Settee, 43 3/4 x 5 ft. 10 in. x 26 3/4 in.; height of seat 19 1/2 in.
Pair of Painted Fauteuils en Cabriolet, 36 1/2 x 22 3/4 x 22 3/4 in., height of seat 17 1/2 in.
Three Unpainted Fauteuils en Cabriolet Frames, 36 1/2 x 23 3/4 x 23 3/4 in. height of seat 14 1/4 in.
Note: Jean-Baptiste Boulard worked almost exclusively for the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne from 1777, supplying a plethora of menuiserie to the crown at Versailles, the Tuileries, Fontainebleau and Saint-Cloud. In 1785, he delivered a suite of thirty-six chairs carved by Jean Hauré for the Salon des Jeux at Versailles and in 1786 collaborated with fellow menuisier Jean-Baptiste Sené (matire in 1769), with whom he shared many Royal commissions, to deliver a suite of twelve dining chairs for the salle à manger of Louis XVI at Versailles (P. Verlet, Le Mobilier Royal Francais, vol. I pp. 81-83, n. 31, pl. XLV).
Condition
The settee has traces of paint and parcel-gilt on the frame. Repairs to the corners of the top rail with minor losses to the carving. Evidence of old worming with minor age splits and wear to the painted and gilt surface. The pair of white painted fauteuils have minor seam separations with nicks. Evidence of old worming, painting refreshed and new corner blocks. The three fauteuil frames with age splits, losses to the carving and old worming. One of the frames with an epoxy-type filler on the backrest, supports, back legs and some of the garland carving. All with structurally sound frames. From a Hastings On Hudson NY estate. Dimensions: blade measures approx. 26 1/2" in length. Condition: Good, with light surface scratches and minor dings/dents. Sword exhibits wear consistent with age. Missing kojiri (endmount). Damaged brown ito (hilt wrap). Blade exhibits chips. Saya (scabbard) exhibits a few dings.
