19th C. Maine Seaman/Machinist Daniel D. Merrill and wife Eliza A. Russell Bartlett manuscript collection of papers consisting of personal and business correspondence of American Seaman and machinist Daniel D. Merrill (b. 3 March 1820). Merrill worked as a machinist in the machine shop of Saco Water Power Co. in Biddeford. Included are Merrill's certificate as an American Seaman attesting to a scar on his leg and foot a manuscript Family Record and a series of letters from Merrill's second wife Eliza A. Russell Bartlett written to her husband during a long separation in 1853. She describes family lifeon a farm in 19th C. Maine: the children have measles chicken pox and typhoid fever; she is ''lonely and homesick'' she describes the joy of attending a ''Camp meeting'' in 1853 and the ''good roasting corn'' they eat from their fields along with potatoes and beans from the garden. She also wrote that ''Father has gone out to speckled mountain today with Officer Blake of Norway [Maine] to arrest Sam McKeen for selling liquer [sic].'' Also included are a couple of letters regarding Merrill's daughter Joanna who wanted to go to school although there was not enough money. Receipts for tobacco lard tongue coat cigars and iron kettle a Brittania teapot and a rat trap along with many other items. Business papers also include an Indenture (a contract) to lease the ''Corinthian Hall'' in Bath Maine for use as an Armory with the right to sublet it as a dance hall.

Pencil-signed, dated, and titled to the bottom margin of the right image, and numbered to the bottom margin of the left image (#34/40). Each is presented behind plexiglass in maple frames that measure 29 1/4" x 40 1/4". Commissioned by the Print Society of the Friends of Art of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, who hold a copy from the edition in their permanent collection.
Hugh Merrill studied under Alex Katz, Robert Motherwell, John Cage, and Gabor Peterdi at Yale College, before becoming a longtime professor of printmaking at the Kansas CIty Art Institute. He has enjoyed a long and celebrated career in the visual arts, with his work held in many permanent museum collections and shown in numerous international exhibitions.
Provenance : From the collection of a Fortune 500 company, acquired from the Nelson Sales & Rental Gallery (Kansas City, MO) in 1990.

August Morning photograph by E.W. Merrill Elbridge Warren Merrill (American 1868-1929) early 20th century. Hand-tinted photograph signed in white paint l.l. titled on verso; framed 15.75 x 19.5 in. Merrill a newspaper photographer from Boston Massachusetts settled in Alaska after the 1897 Klondike gold rush. In Alaska his photographs began to focus on the tribes of the Northwest Coast especially the Tlingit Indians and the natural beauty of the surrounding area. From 1919-1922 Merrill served as the official custodian what would become the Sitka National Park. Today his photographs are valued not only for their historical importance but also for their artistry. Condition: Not removed from frame.
