Punch decorated with geometric designs; unmarked. Also included is a Los Castillos medallion with a relief of Mary on the front and stamped with the appropriate marks on the reverse, 1-3/8"D, with a bail at the top to suspend it from a chain. The medallion weighs approx. .485 troy oz.

These currency pieces are known locally as tajaderos (Spanish for "chopping knife") due to their shape. They were standardized currency in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, set to be equal to roughly 8000 cacao seeds. Size of largest: 6.375" L x 2.2" W (16.2 cm x 5.6 cm)

MEXICAN LOS CASTILLO SILVER, COPPER,MEXICAN LOS CASTILLO SILVER, COPPER, BRASS BIRD TRAYSLatin America, Mexico, Taxco, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beautiful pair of hand wrought brass, copper, and silverplated trays in the form of birds, made by the esteemed Los Castillo workshops of Taxco. Each stylized bird has a triangular head that elongates into a curled body with the concave, trapezoidal wings, and tail forming the serving bowls. The larger tray has a lapis and resin eye inlaid in the head, the beak is a copper tone, and the rest of the surface is brushed with golden or silver hues. The other bird has the opposite color scheme; copper toned body and golden beak, with a turquoise inlaid eye. The undersides of both are marked "LOS CASTILLO / TAXCO / HAND-WROUGHT/ HECHO EN MEXICO / 42." A charming example of creative Taxco metalwork by Los Castillo! 5 AZTEC COPPER TEPOZTLI AXE HEADSPre-Columbian,5 AZTEC COPPER TEPOZTLI AXE HEADSPre-Columbian, Mexico City region, Aztec (Mexica), ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A fine collection of 5 copper axe heads of several shapes. The 2 widest have a straight spine and a blade edge that curves slightly along the bottom. The blade with a heavy green patina and mineral deposits has a tapering butt and a head that ends in a broad curve with flared tips. In Aztec culture metal and stone heads were sometimes known as a "tepoztli," the blade component of a "tlaximaltepoztli"- an axe for utilitarian and ceremonial use. The last 2 blades have signs of use with a nicks and abrasions along both blade and butt. Larger axes were used in battle, while ones of these sizes were used as currency or ceremonially.
