European, possibly French, Gothic Revival oak coffer or trunk, 19th century, having carved tracery panels, document box to the interior, and rising on block feet, with a paper Sisser Brothers Warehouses, Inc. label to the back but otherwise apparently unmarked. Provenance: Gift of Francis Burrall Hoffman (American 1882-1980) and his wife Virginia 'Dolly' Kimball. Paint decorated three-dimensional scenes with floral decoration accented by Kingfisher feathers. On a painted silk ground. Wooden frames with applied carved floral decorated openwork panels in shades of green and red. Most probably Cantonese. By consignor provenance these pieces were purchased at auction in Miami during the 1950's. From a White Plains, NY estate.
