Provenance: Estate of Nancy Shaw Michel New Orleans; from the Estate of Virginia Shaw Putnam 11 Rosa Park New Orleans. Note: William Woodward documented the historic buildings of the Vieux Carré in the early 20th century. A pioneering advocate of historic preservation his impressionist works uniquely record the ambience architectural character and street life of this district. The work offered here shows a view down Dauphine Street with St. Louis Street intersecting it. The mid-morning light creates strong shadows on the street while various people go about their business. Rendered in a brilliant palette this large composition is highly finished and has a vibrancy and energy not often found in works from this series.

Note: Located on the corner of 68th and Columbus Streets in New York City Paddy McGlades Saloon was a favorite neighborhood bar for over a hundred years. Hanging from the ceiling was a round clock with the numbers printed backwards allowing the patrons to read the time in a mirror without turning around. Images of horseracing a favorite pastime of the bartender Al "The Bishop " were displayed above the register.
