EMMA LAMPERT COOPER (AMERICAN, 1855-1920) MOROCCAN COAST Oil artist board. Signed 'E. Lampert Cooper' (lower left).
Emma Lampert Cooper (American, 1855-1920)
Emma Lampert Cooper was born in 1860 near Rochester, New York. Upon leaving the area, she studied at the Cooper Union Art School and the Art Students League in New York, and at the Delecluse Academy in Paris. Later returning to Rochester, she taught at the Mechanics Institute from 1893-1897 and was active in the art life of the city until her marriage to the painter Colin Campbell Cooper from 1897. After traveling in Europe for a period of time, the couple settled in New York City. There, working in an impressionist style, she turned to her husband’s favorite theme, the architectural treasures of New York and other historic cities.
The Coopers traveled constantly in search of subjects and in the spring of 1913, they visited Charleston, South Carolina. Though nothing is known about their stay, their visit is recorded in Colin’s paintings of some of the city’s most historic and cherished structures, including St. Philip’s Church, Charleston. During their trip, they also visited Beaufort, a small coastal town about seventy miles south of Charleston, noted for its picturesque buildings, alleyways, and streets. Emma’s Old Beaufort, South Carolina is of a subject that she and Colin both painted, probably side-by-side and on the same day. Fluent brushwork and radiant color are typical of her vivacious style.

MARK TWAIN, FORTY-THREE DAYS IN AN OPEN BOAT, 1866 Forty-Three Days in an Open Boat by Mark Twain, New York: Harper's. 1866. Contained in volume 34 of "Harper's New Monthly Magazine" from December 1866 to May, 1867. The December 1866 issue contains Twain's first magazine appearance, of which he wrote an account years later, 'My Debut as a Literary Person,' in which he said, "in my view, a person who published things in a mere newspaper could not properly claim recognition as a Literary Person...he must appear in a magazine." He goes on to tell how he submitted this story to Harper's, signing it as "Mark Twain" so as to give his nom de plume national exposure, only to have the Harper editor garble the spelling of his name, defeating the scheme. Indeed, the index reflects that this article is by one 'Mark Swain.' A milestone in Twain's literary career. Quarter bound black morocco with gilt. Raised bands and gilt titling on the spine.

CIRCA
BRASS MODEL OF THE BELL ROCK LIGHTHOUSE
CIRCA 1900 on a rectangular base, unmarked24.2cm high, 10.8cm wide, 16.5cm deepProvenance: Stevenson CollectionThe Bell Rock lighthouse, engineered by Robert Stevenson, was built between 1807 and 1810. The masonry work was to such a high standard that it has not been replaced for over 200 years. It lies in a treacherous stretch of the North Sea, twelve miles east of Dundee. The lighthouse was built on a rock known as the Bell Rock (or Inchcape). According to legend the rock got its name because, in the 14th century, the Abbot of Arbroath had a warning bell installed on the rock, which floating debris, the winds and the sea would act upon to toll the bell and warn mariners of this approaching danger. Soon after installation the bell was carried off by Dutch pirates. The lighthouse had the first revolving light in Scotland. It was de-manned in 1988 and from then it has been remotely monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board headquarters at 84 George Street, Edinburgh. It is still an active lighthouse today. Because of the engineering challenges that were overcome to build the lighthouse, it has been described as one of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World.

Important Private Virginia Estate
Note: The Christie's catalog entry for the needlework upholstered example records that "With its original needlework upholstery cover and a notable provenance, this side chair is an important and rare survival from mid-eighteenth century Philadelphia. As indicated by the Roman numerals on its frame and slip-seat, the chair was originally part of a larger set of at least nine chairs of which two or three others are known. These comprise a chair at Colonial Williamsburg, a single example advertised in 1956, and a third, which may or may not duplicate the previous example, published in 1960 and sold in 1998 (David Stockwell, advertisement, The Magazine Antiques (September 1956), p. 173; Barbara Snow, "Living with Antiques: The Home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Stanley Lee, Newtown, Pennsylvania," The Magazine Antiques (September 1960), p. 240; Wechsler's Auction House, Washington D.C., 17 January 1998, lot 185). The first three are illustrated with needlework seat covers that are virtually identical to that made for the chair offered here. With green grounds and stylized leaves and flowers worked in shades of red, yellow, blue and green threads, these covers represent the original coverings. As discussed by Morrison H. Heckscher, this set is distinguished by the broad width of its splats. A side chair now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with slightly variant shell carving but an identical splat was most likely made in the same shop and, with a similar historical association as the set represented by the chair offered here, may have furnished the same eighteenth-century household (Morrison H. Heckscher, American Furniture: The Queen Anne and Chippendale Styles (New York, 1985), pp. 82-83, cat. 38).
This chair descended to the twentieth century with a history of being part of the furnishings of Graeme Park in Horsham, Pennsylvania, a provenance that is supported by the other known chairs from the same set, all of which were also associated with the historic house by their later owners. Originally called Fountain Low and probably constructed for utilitarian purposes, Graeme Park was built in 1722 for Lieutenant-Governor Sir William Keith (1669-1749) on his 1,735 acre estate about twenty five miles north of Philadelphia. Keith returned to England in 1728 and, while the chairs were later thought to have been owned by Keith himself, they date to the period following the house's purchase by Keith's son-in-law, Dr. Thomas Graeme (1688-1772) in 1739. Graeme had accompanied Keith to Philadelphia in 1717 and two years later married Keith's step-daughter, Ann Diggs (d. 1765). After purchasing the house, Graeme re-named the estate and began its transformation into a Georgian summer mansion by re-planting the gardens and retrofitting the house with interior panelling. For almost a hundred years after Dr. Graeme's death in 1772, this set of chairs appears to have remained intact on the estate and owned by successive proprietors of Graeme Park. Graeme bequeathed the estate to his daughter, Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson (1737-1801), a respected poet and scholar who hosted America's first salon, attended by Philadelphia's leading intellectual figures such as Dr. Benjamin Rush and Francis Hopkinson. Elizabeth has been credited with working the floral needlework covers on the chairs, but it is also possible that they were stitched by her mother, Ann Diggs Graeme, especially if the chairs were made closer to 1740 than 1760. Evidence of the latter's proficiency in the needlework arts is suggested by "the Crocadile [sic] in Needle Work by Mrs. Graeme," which was in a bed chamber in 1778; interestingly, the same room had "6 chairs with the old Arm chair," possibly a reference to some of the set represented by this chair. During the Revolutionary War, Elizabeth's husband, Hugh Fergusson, was a Loyalist and deserted not only the country, but his wife. In 1791, Elizabeth transferred ownership of the estate to Dr. William Smith (1746-1822), her niece's husband, and in exhchange, he managed her finances. In 1801, Smith sold the parcel of land that contained the mansion house to Samuel Penrose (1748-1833), a prominent local Quaker farmer, and, in 1821 Samuel sold it to his son, William Penrose (1782-1863), who had been living on the estate with his wife in a separate house since their marriage in 1810. For much of the nineteenth century, Graeme Park was largely uninhabited and looked after by the Penrose family, a circumstance that probably contributed to the survival of the chairs' needlework seat covers ("Addendum to Graeme Park," Historic American Buildings Survey , HABS no. PA-579, pp. 1-29; Thomas Allen Glenn, Some Colonial Mansions and Those Who Lived in Them (Philadelphia, 1899), pp. 367-398; Theodore Webber Bean, History of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, 1884), pp. 880-883, 888-896; Simon Gratz, "Some Material for a Biography of Mrs. Fergusson, nee Graeme," Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography , vol. 39, no. 3 (1915), p. 295; "People" [biographies], www.graemepark.org ).
The set of chairs appears to have been separated upon the settlement of William Penrose's estate in 1865. This chair and the example now at Colonial Williamsburg descended through William's daughter, Ann J. (Penrose) Iredell (1811-c.1881) and remained in the Horsham area until sold out of the family. Colonial Williamsburg purchased their chair from Iredell Twining (1879-1971); his sister, Ida (Twining) Jones (c.1873-1968), was the last family owner identified at the time of this chair's sale at auction in 1983. The chair illustrated in The Magazine Antiques in 1960 (see above) descended to William Penrose's younger daughter, Hannah (1820-1894), who at Graeme Park in 1857, married Isaac Worstall Hicks (1809-1898), son of the celebrated artist, Edward Hicks (1780-1849)."

My grandfather 'Pappy' Wise had a cotton farm a few miles, 5 or 6, out of Waxahachie, Texas and one night when I was about 7 or 8 years old a great light appeared in the sky. It was so great that speculation about the end of the world was bruited about among the grown folks at the farm. As it turns out a straw stack had caught fire on an adjoining farm and some small tool sheds and part of a fence was burned. We all visited the place next morning and heard tell of how the farmer and his sons had got the scared horses of the the barn. Hans Irlbacher's original label remains verso, as does part of an exhibition label from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.Franz Stuck was an influential artist of the 19th century and co-founder of the Munich Secession movement. As art instructor his students included Paul Klee, Hans Purrmann, Wassily Kandinsky, Alf Bayrle and Josef Albers, most of whom were involved in the Munich Secession as well. This important early work from the artist's oeuvre was only recently re-discovered in a Kansas City, Missouri home after a 100-year absence from exhibition or publication. Until now, the painting was known only by black and white images in early 20th century art journals and exhibition catalogs.TITLE OF THE WORK:The Art Loss Register lists the title of this work as Lauschende Faune (Listening Fauns). The German art journal Die Kunst, 1904, pictures this work on page 38 and lists the title as Belauscht (Overheard or Eavesdropping). The International Studio - An Illustrated Magazine of Fine and Applied Art, August 1909, illustrates this painting and lists the title as Listening Fauns. The exhibition catalog for the Dallas Art Association's First Annual Exhibition: Contemporary International Art,' November 18-27, 1919 also lists the title as Listening Fauns.EXHIBITION:Metropolitan Museum of Art 1909 (remains of the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition label remain verso)Chicago Institute of Art 1909.Copley Society Boston 1909.Dallas Art Association's First Annual Exhibition: Contemporary International Art, 1919.PROVENANCE:Art Loss Registry lists the succession as beginning with Galerie Heinemann, Franz Stuck's primary dealer, 09 August 1899 acquired for RM 9000 (inventory number 4612) and sold to Hugo Reisinger on 14 August 1899 for RM 9000. Then Hugo Reisinger until at least 1908.The International Studio · An Illustrated Magazine of Fine and Applied Art for August of 1909 includes an image of this painting as part of a nine-page piece titled THE COLLECTION OF HUGO REISINGER I GERMAN AND AMERICAN PICTURES. BY CHRISTIAN BRITON, confirming the owner as Hugo Reisinger in 1909.The painting was exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in January, 1909 and again identified in the exhibition catalog as being the property of Hugo Reisinger. As an aside, Hugo Reisinger was a banker, businessman and serious art collector. He married the 18-year-old daughter of St. Louis, Missouri brewer Adolphus Busch in 1890.In 1919, the exhibition catalog for the Dallas Art Association's First Annual Exhibition: Contemporary International Art,' November 18-27, 1919 marks a change by listing the owner of this painting as Edward A. Faust, a prominent St. Louis, Missouri restaurateur and close friend of Adolphus Bush.As an aside, Edward A. Faust was close friend to Adolphus Bush who brewed a lager named for him. Their families were later connected by marriage. In 1878 Faust went to the Paris Exposition where he purchased his own electric power plant for $15,000 and installed it in his restaurant, establishing the first electric illumination in St. Louis. For the next 100 years the whereabouts of this painting are not precisely known. It was never again exhibited or published and went unrecognized by survivors of the couple who owned it most recently, Colonel and Mrs. S.D. Slaughter of Kansas City, Missouri. When this lost work by Franz Stuck was re-discovered inside the Slaughter's Kansas City, Missouri mansion in 2021, another painting was found there as well. This other painting, a large equestrian scene by a British artist, was accompanied by documentation confirming that it had been purchased by the Colonel and his wife in St. Louis, Missouri in 1964. No receipts for the work by Stuck were found. The city of St. Louis, Missouri is 348 miles from Kansas City.Through descent, this work by Franz Stuck is being offered by two brothers who confirm its existence in the home of their grandparents, Colonel and Mrs. S.D. Slaughter, beginning sometime in the 1960s.ALTERNATE SPELLING:The artist's alternate spelling of Franz Von Stuck marks his receiving the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown in 1906 after which he was known as Franz Ritter von Stuck.Overall framed size measures 45 x 47.25 inches.Very good condition, apparently untouched but for an old over-varnish that has darkened and in some areas, shows some drips and thickness. There are no areas or bits of touch-up or inpainting indicated under UV light examination. There is a 2.5 inch diameter area of deterioration of the medium that shows as a cluster of fine, irregular, vertical lines of white medium exposed in a cluster just to the left of the figure, and scattered to a far lesser degree just below the figure and to the left quadrant. Note: Henry Koehler applied the door stripes in his custom colors. There is a Carfax report available which starts in 1992 and lists no accidents, the mileage is consistent as well as inspections being passed. The report confirms the car was routinely serviced in Southampton, NY where it was collected.
Condition
This beautiful driving car is low mileage, we believe Henry Koehler to be the second owner who drove the car sparingly. All lights and directionals are in working order. The radio, antenna, a/c and water temperature gauge are not currently working. The a/c fan works fine. There is a small dent to driver side door and one to the passenger door at first body line. The body paint on a scale from 1 to 10 is in our opinion a 6.5. Severe craquelure to paint on the panel between the trunk and the roof line, top passenger side of the quarter panel and some discoloration to the clear coat in areas. Overall scatter scratches and minor chips to the surface and bright works expected with use. The tires with approximately 35% use. The car has passed 2021 inspection. Our condition report is based on our experience, we have not had a Mercedes specialist appraise or review the mechanical aspects of this car. Please consult an independent agent for confirmation of condition.
