[Civil War - Manuscripts] Civil War General Orders Referencing the Firing Squad for Union Deserters & a Confederate Spy Lot of 2 including: General Orders No. 114 dated May 4 1863 ordering William F. Corbin and T.G. McGraw of the so-called Confederate Army to be shot unto death at Johnson's Island Ohio for the crimes of recruiting men within the United States to take up arms against the government and carrying mail intended for those in arms against the government. Issued by Major General Ambrose E. Burnside and approved by the President. and General Court Martial Orders No. 39 dated October 18 1864 at Army of the Potomac headquarters issued by command of Major General Meade listing cases of nine men charged with desertion or drunkenness on duty. All four men found guilty of desertion were sentenced to be shot to death with musketry but three had their sentence commuted to hard labor at Dry Tortugas. The fourth Private John Velon Co. G 5th New Hampshire who deserted while on picket duty and attempted to reach the enemy's lines had his sentence upheld. He was executed October 24 1864 near Petersburg Virginia. Condition: Very good.

COURT MARTIAL DOCUMENT; FORBES'S EXPEDITION, 1758 Paul Jackson (1729-1767, Captain in PA Militia, formerly Professor of Greek and Latin and Clerk of Trustees at University of Pennsylvania, later a physician and judge in Chester Co.) Original ADS, comprising a record of the proceedings of a court martial ordered by Col. Hugh Mercer at Ft. Bedford, near Raystown (now Bedford, PA), Sept 8, 1758; 1 p. folio. Three of the four cases involved soldiers under command of Capt James Robertson, 42nd Regt. of Foot, who, upon return from road-building at Laurel Hill, had fired their weapons against orders. One was acquitted, but the other two received 300 and 500 lashes with cat o' nine tails for the infraction. The fourth case involved a wagoneer who defied Major Joseph Shippen's authority and was sentenced to 300 lashes.

CIVIL WAR COMMUTATION DOCUMENTSThree Civil War antique historical documents regarding Samuel L. More. Ohio Commutation papers and CAMP CHASE Discharge certificate. COMMUTATION MONEY document, triplicate form printed by Fitch, Estee, Co., dated June 17, 1864, recording the $300 payment. Accompanying this is the CERTIFICATE OF EXEMPTION is a printed copy of Form 32, partially redacted to change the exemption from Disability to Commutation. Third document is a DISCHARGE ORDER May 8, 1865. More enrolled as a Private in Company D, 198 Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, March 1865, Camp Chase. Commutation was profitable for the military but wildly unpopular, leading to the New York City Draft Riot, July 1863. Draft Week degenerated into a major conflict with President Lincoln diverting several regiments to the city. Handwritten note, red ink, on the side of the Discharge reading "Paid in Full May 13,1868" and signed by the Paymaster. Commutation papers approx. 8-3/8" x 4-1/4", 8-1/4" x 6-1/2", discharge 8-3/4". Certificate of Exemption and Discharge both having folds, the Exemption with one area of approx. 1/4" break on fold. Some toning and staining, rough edges, all common for age. CONFEDERATE VIRGINIA MILITIA ARTILLERY COMMISSION: Commission to Walter D. Leake appointing him Captain in the Virginia Militia Artillery 2nd Regiment 3rd Regiment 2nd division. Leake's unit was subsequently called Leake's Company Virginia Light Artillery and was attached to the Army of Tennessee and saw service in South Carolina and Tennessee suffering heavy losses at Shiloh. Commission is signed by Gov. John Letcher and dated July 29 1861. Sight size 7 1/2'' x 9 3/4'' framed under glass 9 3/4'' x 12 3/4''.CONDITION: Note toning some minor bleed through of writing on back.

Wartime document signed in 1778 by GEORGE CLINTON, considered one of the nation's Founding Fathers. Clinton served as Vice Presidentof the US, as well as New York governor. Document signed also by JOHN MORIN SCOTT, New York's first Secretary of State and a founding member of the Sons of Liberty. Document measures about 8-1/4" x 12". This document is one of several dozen important signed pieces in today's sale that were part of a large collection of American historical documents from 1650 through WWII. ABRAHAM LINCOLN SIGNED WAR
ABRAHAM LINCOLN SIGNED WAR COMMISSION DOCUMENTCivil War military appointment commission document signed by both President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton in black ink, dated July 1863, conferring the rank of Captain in the Veterens Reserve Corps to James H. Remington. Housed in black painted wooden frame. Sight - 19 1/2" H x 15 1/2" W. Framed - 22 1/2" H x 18 1/2" W. Note: James H. Remington was born in Warwick, RI in 1838. He attended East Greenwich Academy before going to Brown University, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1862. In September of that year he was mustered as captain of Company H, 7th Regiment, RI Infantry. His active military career only lasted until December 13, 1862 when he was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg in Virginia. A musket ball shattered his lower jaw and he was formally discharged by reason of disability in May 1863. Remington returned to Rhode Island where he was elected in April l863 to the RI House of Representatives as a representative from Warwick. He resigned his seat in June as he was eager to return to military service. He accepted a captain's commission in the newly formed Veterans Reserve Corps (initially called the Invalid Corps). He was immediately ordered to report for duty at Knight General Hospital in New Haven, CT where he assisted with the formation of companies for the Veterans Reserve Corps. After serving with several different units in Connecticut and Virginia, he settled in as captain with Company E, 1st Regiment of the Veterans Reserve Corps. The company's primary duty was in Elmira, NY to guard rebel prisoners at Camp Chemung from November 1864 to June 1865. (Biography courtesy of the Rhode Island Historical Society). COMMISSIONING DOCUMENT, WILLIAM IV, 1765-1837,King of Great Britain and Ireland, and Hardy, Thomas Masterman, Nelson's flag captain on the Victory and later admiral. Commissioning document signed by William IV and Masterman appointing Major General Sir Charles Cockburn, the Inspector General of the Corps of Marines. It is a one-page oblong folio on vellum with a blue revenue stamp on the left. It is also signed by Sir John Barlow, traveler, explorer, and secretary to the admiralty. Sight size 11 1/2" x 12 1/2", in a modern frame 18" x 19 1/2". Very good condition. Provenance: Webb estate, possibly Mags bros.

CIVIL WAR OFFICER'S COMMISSION, SIGNED LINCOLN Original part-printed certificate signed in full by the President and co-signed by Simon Cameron, Secretary of War, issued on May 6, 1861, naming Robert L. Eastman a 2nd Lieutenant in the 6th Regiment of Infantry; vellum, 17 3/4 X 14 3/4 in., by sight, framed. Eastman graduate West Point in 1861. He was cited for gallant and meritorious service at Gaines' Mill and Malvern Hill in June and July, 1862, and reached rank of Brevet Major. Shortly after he was assigned to West Point as a drawing and geography instructor, and died on Nov. 7, 1865.
