Signeur, c'est Vous, je Vous reconnais (Chapon & Rouault 85), 1927, from Miserere , signed in plate "1967 G. Rouault" Jacquemin, Paris, printer, Ambroise Vollard, Paris., publisher, aquatint, plate 22-3/4 x 18 in., sheet 25-1/2 x 19-3/4 in.; mid century wood frame, 32-5/8 x 27 in.
Rouault became the most famous religious artist of the 20th century. His desire was to create a work that would turn the heart of an observer to the mercy of God. He would use the images of common people who were hurting, poor, dejected, and downtrodden in these compositions. This likely depicts a scene from the road to Emmaus although some believe it to be reference to the doubting disciple, Thomas.
