[Mississippi Company Crash]
[Mississippi Company Crash] "Mississippi of 'Twydbefaamde Goudland door de Inbeelding der Windnegotie" engraved page extracted from Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid (The Great Scene of Folly) c. 1720 sight 14 1/2 in. x 11 1/2 in. matted and framed. Note: The book from which this page was taken contained satirical poems plays and engravings about the great speculative real estate bubble of 1720. The banker John Law a Scot who took over the Mississippi Company of France in 1717 hyped the company stock from 500 livres per share to 18 000 livres. The phrase "Wind-Negotie" in this lot's title translates to "wind-trade" a reference to traders not even owning the stock they sold. The bubble burst as quickly as it rose foreshadowing economic events almost 300 years later.

Marie Atkinson Hull
Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi 1890-1980) "Mississippi Abstract Landscape" c. 1972 oil on canvas signed lower left 23 in. x 60 in. in a period frame. Provenance: Descended in the family of noted Mississippi art collector Bitsy Irby. Note: Marie Hull's style as a painter successfully matured into full abstraction. In the early 1970s she painted a series of Mississippi landscapes which she described as "lyrical abstraction". These works are composed of horizontal bands of color with soft edges and gradations that meld with ease. Hull applied the short vertical strokes after the canvases dried in order to give the paintings a particular texture. The work offered here evokes the red clay of Mississippi under a white-hot sky. Works from this series won the Grand Prize in the Competitive Exhibition of Mississippi Artists at the Mississippi Arts Festival of 1972.

Clarence Millet
Clarence Millet (Ameri-can/Louisiana 1897-1959) "Beyond Flows the Mississippi" oil on canvas signed lower right signed and titled en verso 30 in. x 35 in. in a period frame. Note: Louisiana artist Clarence Millet (1897-1959) painted scenes of the French Quarter rural Mississippi and the Mississippi River batture. Works from the latter group are among his most developed and mature compositions. "Beyond Flows the Mississippi " the painting offered here dramatically conveys the breeze off the river through the arc of the trees and the moss blowing in the wind. The dramatic sky is characteristic of his batture works as shown in paintings in the collections of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and The Historic New Orleans Collection. Millet's depiction of the budding trees and fresh green grass evoke spring while the sky and wind suggest a coming rain storm. The building of houses on the batture land became common throughout the depression-era and continued through the middle of the 20th century. The fact that the land was technically owned by the government meant that building there was tax-free if not strictly legal. Many of the batture dwellers would take advantage of the fertile soil that was inundated with river water in the springtime and create small gardens near their houses. Eventually the "batture dwellers" were forced to leave their homes and find legal housing; most of the homes have since been demolished although a few examples still exist on the Mississippi River at the Jefferson Parish line.
