Rouault became the most famous religious artist of the 20th century. His desire was to create a work that would turn the heart of an observer to the mercy of God. He would use the images of common people who were hurting, poor, dejected, and downtrodden in these compositions.   BUST OF CHRIST IN PAIN, M. BOURGAULT (1897-1967)A bust sculpture of Christ in pain, signed by Médard Bourgault (1897-1967), St-Jean-Port-Joli. Incised on the front: "Ecce homo" (behold the man), the words used by Pontius Pilate prior to the crucifixion. Very good condition, good deep patina. Médard Bourgault was the eldest of three brothers (André and Jean-Julien) who were highly respected artists and pioneers in establishing St-Jean-Port-Joli as the folk art capital of Quebec.
