SANTAS SNOW BUDDY HN5922 - ROYAL
SANTAS SNOW BUDDY HN5922 - ROYAL DOULTON FIGURINELarge detailed figure of a Santa Claus standing next to a snow man with a gift in his hand and two rabbits watching.
Designed by Neil Faulkner, 'Santa's Snow Buddy' is a charming scene showing cheerful Santa taking time to build a classic snowman complete with carrot nose, a cosy green scarf and smart black hat! White-bearded Santa, dressed in his familiar red suit with fur trim is smiling at his handiwork. Two adorable bunnies look on wondering whether the green wrapped gift with a blue bow he's holding is for them or for one of the children who's been good this Christmas. The Father Christmas Annual Figurines are painted by hand by talented ceramic artists, who use time honored techniques and traditional colors such as Santa Claus Red. The bold colors and painting style are perfect for emphasizing the nostalgic mood and the story telling "moment in time", that this jovial Santa depicts. - Christmas Day Petite Figures

THURSTON, HOWARD. THURSTON THE
THURSTON, HOWARD. THURSTON THE GREAT MAGICIAN. BALAAM A...Cincinnati, Strobridge Litho., 1914. Color lithographed advertising a transposition illusion from Thurston’s show which included a boy, girl, and donkey vanishing and reappearing in several parts of the theater. 28 ½ x 38 ½". Minor restoration. A-. “[One] reason why Howard Franklin Thurston was the preeminent magician in his era was a willingness to spend whatever amounts of money were necessary to keep the show in top form constantly bringing in new effects. “Balaam and His Donkey” was such an instance. A boy, girl and donkey walked up a short ramp into a curtained cabinet. The donkey balked at first, until Thurston whispered into his ear, and it went right in. All three had disappeared when the curtain was reopened. Instantly an uproar at the back of the theatre revealed the boy and the girl trying to pull the donkey down the aisle. No other magicians, probably would spend the money needed for two sets of twins and two donkeys, their care and transport, for one illusion lasting so brief a moment in time. But [Thurston] could afford it.” (John Booth, “Memoirs of a Magician’s Ghost,” The Linking Ring, V79 N11, Nov. 1999)

William Henry Buck (American/New
William Henry Buck (American/New Orleans 1840-1880) "Louisiana Sugar Mill" oil on academy board signed "Sketch by Buck" lower right pencil-signed en verso "W.E. Seebold Bookseller Stationer and Fine Arts New Orleans" label en verso of backing board 9 1/2 in. x 12 1/4 in. original giltwood frame. Provenance: Descended in a New Orleans family. Note: William Henry Buck's views of Louisiana often depict aspects of plantation life. In the painting offered here Buck shows a sugar mill with its distinctive square chimney on the right side of the composition. Just beyond is a raised low-slung building along the banks of the bayou. A large moss-laden live oak tree features prominently in the landscape providing shade to grazing cattle. Other buildings and cattle are depicted in the background. Signed "Sketch by Buck " this painting has loose brush work which is very much in keeping with the plein air tradition of landscape painting. Buck together with his teacher Richard Clague Jr. made visits to locales in the Louisiana countryside where they made studies in order to complete ambitious paintings in their respective studios. The work offered here captures a moment in time on a late 19th c. Louisiana plantation rendered with striking immediacy by an accomplished artist experiencing the locale first hand.
