No Reserve Important Antique 12th century Japanese - carved wood figure of a seated Buddha. Unkei (1150–1223). Dated 1198 Kamakura period. Carved in the warihagi zukuri technique and seated in the lotus position. Shaka Nyorai seated Buddha with many Heian Kamakura period text. UNKEI'S Signature Hall Marking techniques are used as Raised platform, light weight Box Wood, iron staple fastenings techniques, rock inset crystal eyes, Upwards Facing Left Foot - Moji texts bears the name UNKEI numerous times & Mongaku Shonin, reads - Myoe Shonin with Spring New Year party with much laughing smiling with Gaijin at Kannedadera temple east Koya Kaido road Osaka. - In 1198 Buddhist archives in Japan- Samurai priest Mongaku Shonin gifted Myoe Shonin his favorite student with a UNKEI made Buddha. This figure is believed to be that figure. Provenance - Purchased from a large collection of antique Buddhas disassembled partially assembled purchased Kyoto Japan 2002 - Unkei (1150–1223) is considered one of the greatest Japanese wood sculptors, famous for his lifelike carvings. Fine Japanese carved lacquered and carved wood figure of K?kai - born 27 July 774 – died 22 April 835- born Saeki no Mao, posthumously called Kobo Daishi "The Grand Master who Propagated the Dharma", was a Japanese Buddhist monk, calligrapher, and poet who founded the esoteric Shingon school of Buddhism. He travelled to China, where he studied Tangmi (Chinese Vajrayana Buddhism) under the monk Huiguo. Upon returning to Japan, he founded Shingon—the Japanese branch of Vajrayana Buddhism. With the blessing of several Emperors, K?kai was able to preach Shingon teachings and found Shingon temples. Like other influential monks, K?kai oversaw public works and constructions. GORYEO DYNASTY OR LATER ??????? ???of ovoid form rising from a counter-sunk foot to a slender neck collared by a slightly domed small disk, the long neck continuing to a lipped rim, one side of the shoulder set with a tubular spout with an everted mouth and a hinged cover(1)35.6cm high; 929gProvenance: Han Collection, 17 August 2018, with a printed receipt.Dr. Kenneth P. Lawley's inventory number: M.57.Note: Distinctively shaped containers like this were traditionally used in Asia as water sprinklers for Buddhist purification rituals. They were used to offer clean water to the altar or carried by Buddhist monks travelling for cultivation. This kundika type was popular during the Tang Dynasty and continued to be used in the northern regions of China during the Northern Song and Liao dynasties. It travelled with Buddhism through China to reach Korea. In Goryeo, bronze kundika were especially popular. Similar examples were also made in ceramics and glazed in celadon. Several comparable examples cast in bronze and dated to the Goryeo dynasty are in museum collections, including two in the National Museum of Korea, accession nos. Sinsu 1973 and Sinsu 1364; one in the Brooklyn Museum, possession no. 74.27; one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession no. 23.115; and the other is in the British Museum, registration no. 1974,1031.1.Please note this lot will be offered with no reserve. ???????

1. A parchment leaf containing prayers of mass, illuminated with filigree designs to the margin edges, written and decorated by the Carthusian monks of Spain circa 14th century. The sight measures 11" x 9", and the glazed frame measures 16 3/4" x 13 3/4".
2. A vellum breviary double-leaf, with Lombardic capitals (most notable a large initial "P"), Southern Italy circa 1450. The leaf measures 5 3/4" x 8 1/4", and it is loosely housed in a folder that measures 11 1/2" x 9 1/2".
Condition
Each good condition, noting natural rippling to each, and minor creasing to the bottom right of the Carthusian leaf.

"The temple looks to be set in white clouds, which the monks don’t have to sweep away. The door opens when the visitor arrives, surrounded by the pine flowers in thousands of mountains. Created by Nan Nong (the author’s art name), the master of Un Lim San Bang (Mountain House Un Lim)."
and sealed in upper right corner: "Heo Geon (the author’s full name) ’s seal" and "Nan Nong (the author’s art name)." Overall open 56" x 52 ½" and folded 56" x 26 ¼" x 1 ?".
Provenance: Estate of Dr. Ye Yong Chun (Korean, 1910-1994), who served in the South Korean government, notably as Head of Civil Affairs in the Ministry of Education in 1944, Minister in Office of Governor-General of Korea, Vice Governor and Governor of Bank of Korea (1951-1961), Minister of Construction from (1964-1966), Chairman of Korean Branch of International LiONS Club, Chair of Korean International Law Association and Deputy Chair of Democratic-Republican Party; brought to the USA in the early 1980s by descent in the family, thence to current owner.

ROYAL DOULTON PRINKNASH FIGURINE, SAINT BENEDICTA rare figurine modeled for monks of Prinknash Priory.
This is a very rare Royal Doulton Prinknash figurine, modeled after Saint Benedict, the 6th century patron of monastic communities. Glazed with a rare lustre of green and cream with a raven near based, a reference to the legend of the saint and a helpful bird. Produced by Doulton on behalf of the Benedictine Monks of Prinknash Priory, Gloucestershire until 1945. Stamped DOULTON PAX with Keys mark to base.
