- Fine Cartier Franco-Italian Sterling
Fine Cartier Franco-Italian Sterling Silver Seau a Champagne in the Form of a Large Pineapple, third quarter 20th century, fabricated for Cartier by Fratelli Cacchione, Milan, h. 14", dia. 7", 53.63 t. oz. Fratelli Cacchione was founded in 1889 by Ciro Cacchione in his native Chieti town of Rocca San Giovanni. Cacchione drew inspiration from the great goldsmiths of Florence and jewelers of Abruzzi and, with the assistance of his sister and brother-in-law, began producing silver in the classical Italian styles, yet updated for modern tastes. By the early 1900's, the firm had moved to Florence and was renowned for its table and tobacco boxes. Cacchione's five sons - Achille, Oscar, Ettore, Eraldo and Ugo - each followed their father's craft, branching out to open the Fiera di Milano in the 1920's. The company moved to Milan entirely in 1933, at which point it assumed the name by which it would achieve its greatest fame: Fratelli Cacchione. After the war, and under the direction of its third generation, Fratelli Cacchione produced a range of opulent silver items of the finest quality, most notably their sporting trophies and, as here, their extravagant and amusing vessels modeled after nature. Their commissions have included the wedding favors of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco in 1956 and the 351 silver replicas of the Montreal Olympic Stadium - three each for the 117 participating countries - in 1976. The firm continues today, headed by Ciro Cacchione's great-grandson Oscar Cacchione.
