SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH WITH MASONIC IMAGERY MID-19TH CENTURY LENGTH 5".SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH WITH MASONIC IMAGERY, Mid-19th Century, Obverse depicts an arch of stars above a spread-wing eagle perched atop a ball at the pinnacle of a monument. Eagle with a shield at its breast and arrows and olive branches in its talons. Monument with an arrow and an ax flanking the ball, a stylized American flag and the scales of justice at the front corners, and a rising sun at the front. Reverse depicts a man in a vibrantly patterned uniform, with a dagger in his belt and a long piece of rope in one hand. Some elements on both sides executed in pinpoint. Dimensions: Length 5". Provenance: A Scrimshaw Collection Originating on Nantucket Island.

Three scrimshaw whale's teeth: one with boy running and waving with "1863" below, verso with sailor pointing to his left on flagged mast, 6-3/4 in.; two with similar decoration, lady holding handkerchief, one polychromed green, red, blue and yellow, 4-3/4 in., 19th century. All with age cracks, plugged with wood, mounted to wood base, probably lacking glass cover; base with chips and scratches.

The second piece depicts the bow of a ship as it makes it way to the dock. This piece is 5" x 2-3/4."

SCRIMSHAW WHALE’S TOOTH WITH SHIP PORTRAIT AND MEMORIAL SCENE CIRCA 1850 LENGTH 5.75".SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH WITH SHIP PORTRAIT AND MEMORIAL SCENE, Circa 1850, Obverse depicts a starboard portrait of an American brig under reduced sail, flying pennants and flags off the masts and an American flag off the stern. Reverse depicts a mourning dove perched atop a weeping willow that arches over a conical monument set on a double pedestal engraved with an urn. Both scenes set within geometric borders, the mourning scene with stylized fan designs at the upper corners. Deeply stippled accents in both scenes, including reef points on the brig and branches on the willow tree. Mellow patina. Dimensions: Length 5.75". Provenance: Acquired from May Sanford, daughter of Leroy Sanford of Friendly Road, Cranston, Rhode Island. This branch of the Sanford family had moved from Warren, Rhode Island to Cranston.

Mid 19th Century
accurately depicting a sperm whaling scene, showing a full-rigged ship with four whaleboats in various stages of pursuit of a pod of four whales, with three small, barren-looking islands in the background, and the back with a rendering of a two conventional memorial or mortuary vignettes.
Length 6 inches.

Lot of assorted scrimshaw
Lot of assorted scrimshaw carvings and snuff boxes. Includes a scrimshaw carving on whale's tooth depicting a ship at sea a scrimshaw uncarved whale's tooth and two early scrimshaw snuff boxes. One box has a removable wooden lid and wood base and the other seems to be constructed entirely of whale bone or tooth. Both are very unusual (see pics). Condition: carved scrimshaw tooth has an age crack running down center signs of age and wear to boxes wooden base box has had base glued in see images. Carved tooth measures 4.5'' long total x 1.5'' wide at widest point. Snuff boxes measure 3.5'' long each x approximately 1.75'' tall. Shipping weight .7 lbs.
