Note: Paul Calle holds acclaim as a painter of both Western themes and NASA space programs. For him, they were related as they were both about the exploration of new frontiers. He was hired by NASA and worked for them off an on through the 1960s illustrating the work and preparation of the astronauts. He also produced space themed stamps for the US Postal Service. His best known stamp was from 1969 commemoration the Apollo 11 moon landing which was so successful that it had a run of 150 billion. During the 1970s he turned his talents towards Western paintings, particularly Native Americans and mountain men. "I think that if I had to state a goal, a hope pertaining to my work," Calle said, "my aim would be to help keep alive that huge reservoir of our past, to draw strength and sustenance from it, to build upon it in ways that are new and different, but not reject it."
