THOMAS MORAN (AMERICAN 1837-1926) A
THOMAS MORAN (AMERICAN 1837-1926) A PAINTING, "MUJERES ...THOMAS MORAN (American 1837-1926) A PAINTING, "Mujeres de Veracruz," CIRCA 1883, oil on canvas, signed L/R, verso a paper gallery label. 20" x 30" Note: Called the "Dean of American Landscape Painters," Thomas Moran traveled to Mexico in 1883 where he likely painted this composition of women at the plaza fountain in front of the Veracruz Cathedral. The signature appears to be in ink which explains Moran's autograph style version, rather than the capitalized/monogramed signature typically used on his paintings. Provenance: Property from a South Texas Collector.
Condition:
Mild surface wear and expected toning, a small damage L/R, but overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age. THOMAS MORAN (AMERICAN 1837-1926) A CHROMOLITHOGRAPH, "...THOMAS MORAN (AMERICAN 1837-1926) A CHROMOLITHOGRAPH, "Grand Canyon of Arizona from Hermit Rim Road," a fine oversized first edition chromolithograph in bright colors, artist's printed signature "TMORAN, 1912." lower left in image, center below image "Grand Canyon of... Thomas Moran N.A.," lower left below image "Copyright. 1913, By The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway System," opposite lower right (printed by) "American Lithographic Co, N.Y.," published by Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway System, 1913, image: 26 3/8" x 35", including blank margins 38" x 46". Note: Thomas Moran is considered to be one of the foremost artist of the American Southwest and the present day prices for his paintings reflect this respect. His oeuvre included several works of the Grand Canyon and the original 1912 painting which this print is drawn from is currently in the offices of the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railway Co Art Collection. This was his last work reproduced in chromolithography and was one of 2,500 printed. Many did not survive to today as they were placed unprotected in railway stations and others were given away as promotional gifts. The remaining ones were retained by the company until 1996 when they were placed with a Santa Fe New Mexico gallery where they were each offered for $4,800. Provenance: Property from a Corporate Collection, Houston, Texas.
Condition:
Good condition, some darkening of paper from ageing and some foxing spots scattered throughout. Not examined out of frame. THOMAS
THOMAS MORAN(Pennsylvania/California, 1837-1926)
A Glimpse of Georgica Pond, Long Island, signed lower right "T Moran 1885", oil on canvas, 22 x 18 in.; original gilt wood and composition reverse profile frame with acanthus and ribbon and stick decoration, "T.A. Wilmurt/New York" frame label
Provenance: Mrs Mortense Mead, Croton Falls, New York (label verso), probably acquired from the artist, circa 1886 (family tradition holds that four Moran works were acquired directly from the artist, one each year from 1882 to 1886); By descent in family; Private Knoxville Collection
Notes: According to Phyllis Braff this painting was exhibited in November 1885 at the National Academy of Design. It is described in the American Art Association catalog of 1886 as "One of the picturesque forest scenes common to the extreme Long Island coast." Moran painted this favorite scene a number of times as it was just a few minutes away from his studio in East Hampton.
For a related pencil sketch see Moran Thomas and Anne Morand. 1996. Thomas Moran the Field Sketches 1856-1923 . Norman: University of Oklahoma Press for the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art Tulsa, no. 520, page 197.
In March 2012, a new record was set by Brunk Auctions for a Thomas Moran watercolor titled, Cliffs of Green River-Wyoming Territory which sold for $1,700,000. The significance of that work was in part due to the provenance, which could be traced back to the artist and was documented through a photograph of the painting in the home circa 1895. It was also noted in an early family inventory. This painting comes from the same collection and was likely acquired around the same time as Cliffs of Green River.
This painting will be included in Phyllis Braff, Melissa Webster Speidel and Stephen L. Good's forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's works as #1077.
Condition:
original stretcher and tacking edge, pentimento of central tree indicating a change of composition, small 1/4 in. tear bottom with associated paint loss, crackle, some cupping, stretcher marks, canvas slack, yellowed varnish/surface grime; frame with repairs, cracking commensurate with age
