Kerr"; Rowan County, North Carolina court bond, 1833, involving cash and "4 negroes", crossed out ; last will of Alexander Silliman, Sumter District, South Carolina, "To my brother James…I now give…the service of my negroe George…", separations ; Rowan County 1845 summons regarding guardianship of a mentally handicapped person, Reese Johnston, "…much attached to an old black man formerly the property of the said Reese's father…"; two account statements of Margaret Wilson, one 1829 listing "Negroes - 124.29", one 1842 listing "8 pr. Negro Shoes…1.00…8.00" bought of C. E. Moss & Co. (no place); three Mecklenburg County, North Carolina conveyances involving slaves owned by members of the Menteithe family in 1842; Stokes County, North Carolina court bond involving James Merrill, accused of "carrying away a free boy of colour…", September 1802, 10 x 7-1/4 in. to 16 x 13-1/4 in. TWO PHOTOGRAPHS BY THE BAYARD WOOTTEN - GEORGE MOULTON STUDIO, CHAPEL HILL The first a gelatin silver print of a scene from the 1920 Carolina Playmakers production of "Dod Gast Ye Both! A Comedy of Mountain Moonshiners" in Chapel HIll. A note on the back says the still in the scene was "...taken by Orange County, NC sheriff's department from local moonshiners." (frame 7-1/2 x 10-3/4 in.) (good condition); the second image a panoramic view titled "Firemen's Tournament - New Bern, N. C. Aug. 1928," showing participants in front of the Craven County courthouse; presented in a modern faux wood plastic frame (14-3/4 x 39 in.) (edge chips; some stains from a long-ago liquid spill).

GREENE COUNTY, TN JAR, E.W. MORTGreene County, Tennessee alkaline glaze and cobalt decorated stoneware pottery jar by E.W. Mort. Stamped under the handle "E. W. MORT MOHAWK". 13 3/4"H x 8" dia . E.W. Mort (1853-1923) was born in the Strasburg, VA and possibly trained as a potter in this area. In addition to working with Washington County, Virginia potters, other crocks stamped "E.W. Mort Mohawk" suggests he may have also worked in Greene Co., TN for a period of time. Mort ceased making pottery in 1893 and became a Methodist minister.
Condition:
Scattered chipping and one large chip to rim. One handle missing. Scattered chipping to body and several hairline cracks to the body.

Jordan, Randolph County, North Carolina, Seagrove area, died 1896) with large punched "2" below, 13-3/4 in., large rim loss (1-1/2 x 4 in.), 1 in. rim chip, various surface anomalies and grooves as made . Deaccessioned from MESDA and Old Salem to benefit the Acquisition Fund.
